Gameplay of Odyssey

Hello!... new player of ED here!

I started with doing Odyssey missions and find it a bit lacking (gunplay, flimsy AI, jerky animations etc.). Do you guys know if they are planning on fleshing out the on-foot stuff some more? or if it is as is now?

It feels kind of cheap that you get flagged as a criminal, when you nonchalantly get told, mid jump in a low gravity environment, to stop for a scan :p and then get pummeled for not complying. So far I also noticed that every station or settlement you step into is just a copy+paste with certain textures replaced, such as the faction indicating billboards, site name and so on. While I understand why that is the case, and also liked Starfield, which is also samey with plopped in copy pastas, is that something they intend building on or changing at some point? or should I concentrate on in-spaceship stuff instead and see Odyssey as something extra, and not a main focus?

Otherwise I have got to say I like the balance between the different gameplay loops so far, as it all has its merits. I understood from glancing google that Exobiology is very lucrative and I look forward to trying it out later. I always liked transport missions though, so I started flying around like a lunatic in the same system and will buy the Python later today for that purpose and then save the initial recommendation for Exobiology (Cobra MK3 (bought the MK5 right after though)) for later :-D

Cheers!

We've seen nothing on the road map so officially no information. Looking at what they've added to the game since Odyssey came out it's clearly not a priority. The player base generally doesn't seem to like the on foot content and so FDev seem to have mostly accepted that view and focussed on other parts of the game. It's there but I would not expect any changes to it any time soon. All elements of the game are very static for very long periods of time which is another indication that you shouldn't expect any changes any time soon.

The lesson learned here is: Watch where you're jumping around, I guess ;).

I doubt this is ever going to change. It's a basic issue of procedural generation and where they chose to set the limit of it. There is a pool of blueprints of settlements, and one of them gets plopped down acoording to some ruies when there is a settlement to place. The prodedural generation doesn't go as far as actually generate the settlement itself. It might just be too complicated to do so. It is far worse in Starfield though, where the places are literally copied and pasted, including enemies, loot and datapads.

I get your argument about Starfield being worse in that regard, but it is significantly more fun to play on the ground nonetheless (I get that it was not what this game was going for, but I am referring to gunplay alone), and I pretty much already decided not to touch 90% of Odyssey stuff again, which is sad because it has massive potential.

I have played CSGO/CS2 for 7000 hours at this point (along with maybe 30+ games in the FPS genre), and the gunplay in the game is unequaled. Only rivaled by, in my opinion, a modded Fallout 4 with realistic damage, modded Starfield with ditto (and a jetpack mod making gameplay super fast if your PC can cope :p) and OG COD MW2/3 HC.

One of my first encounters in ED Odyssey was with the Black Widow crew and the VERY spongy guards at the outpost. Even when you finally kill them, you don't get that "yes"-feeling as you get in the aforementioned games, which makes it entirely obsolete to me. Also, I think the mission was bugged because it just stopped counting at 12/17 at some point. I think I will very much enjoy the exploration aspect of Odyssey though.

Thank you for taking the time to comment on the matter to both of you!

Cheers!

ED has always focused on ship-based gameplay, so it's no surprise that FDEV created a different kind of on-foot gameplay. While I understand your reaction to it, I should add that I actually enjoy the on-foot missions. I accepted what FDEV built as a highly structured, stealth-oriented gameplay, with a lot of specific limits. Once I did that, I ended up finding the 8 - 10 different kinds of on-foot gameplay fun and distracting.

I have no idea how many people had the same reaction and we may be in a minority, But once I gave up thinking of Odyssey on-foot as another traditional FPS with the option to shoot your way through every mission, I relaxed and had more fun.

I absolutely adore on-foot conflict zones. I’ve not played a serious FPS though, usually they are too much for me. EDO ground combat is just right.
