Hardware & Technical Gaming Laptop

Hi,

I'm interested in getting a small-ish gaming laptop. I'm looking for recommendations. This is not intended to be a full time rig (I've got a pc for that), but something I can take with me on the road.

I've looked at a Razer Blade. I like the look of it, but the reviews don't quite match up to the price.

I don't like the options for Alienware.

I'm wondering if a souped up MacBook Air with Windows installed would do the trick.

Any other suggestions?

No specific models in mind, but you'll want an i5 or better, 8GB RAM or better, and the beefiest GPU you can find.

Gotta say slim and light is going to be the enemy of a decent gaming laptop though - powerful GPUs still generate a lot of heat that needs to be removed.

I'm sure someone'll be along soon with specific model recommendations.

I never got it why people buy laptops for gaming .. and ofc later complain in the forums that the game runs crappy or won't run at all.
Maybe it's me but i realy do not see the good side of having a laptop other as to be able to play while on a vacation or sitting in the train lol :D

Anyhow i did look myself at the new haswell laptops , this tech realy improved by using less energy and overal reduced heat , wich in turn makes sure your laptop runs longer on a battery.
Haswell is developed for future laptops and tablets in mind

The new videocard line from ATI the R7 and 9 series are amazing , they are much improved.. a hell of a lot less heat, on max you never get above 70C.. wich is amazing knowing all the other cards with stock coolers easely get to 95c on ultra settings , i just bought myself an msi r9 270x 4gb fr my desktop and will be testing it in 2 days.

Anyhow seeing i want the same quality in a laptop as in my desktop , the prices are rediculous haha

Greetings all..:)

I have a problem: I'm currently in Standard Beta and will be looking to upgrade my laptop 'soon'ish to something with a chance of handling ED. Now, in an ideal world that upgrade would be to a standard PC rig not a laptop, but my problem is available space. I am aware that I'll be paying more for a decent laptop in comparison to a standard PC rig, but it's a situation I may have to deal with...:(

Anyhoo, would anybody be able to point me in the direction of a good quality (?) gaming laptop? I've been poking around on a couple of websites but I'm not tech savvy and so I'm feeling a bit lost!

One laptop which does appear to tick some boxes spec wise (from my very limited knowledge) is linked below.. Any constructive comments re: gaming laptops - positive and negative - are greatly appreciated :)

Macbook Air will work ok on low settings, but it will cook itself.

Really you need something hefty with enough thermal headroom, like an Asus ROG.

Rog, how many tentacles did you threaten Asus with to bag that sponsorship deal? ;)

:D

As a possible alternative to a laptop, how about a small form factor PC tucked behind your TV with a wireless keyboard and mouse?

That is something I considered, although it would be useful to have some transportability for work use (my current laptop is on the way out), and I couldn't afford gaming rig and new laptop..

Edit: probably should have made that clear before, sorry :)

So you're going for the old "Well, you see I need it for work really ... " ;)

Also looking for a gaming laptop.

Criteria are:

Something that the wife won't complain is too big
..so 15 inches or less ;)
As ultra-booky as possible, sleek and cool

It will need to be a haswell i7
Graphics will need to be either,
GTX870m or better
Or
GTX7--m in SLI
If I can have a nice shiny ips panel too i will be grinning.
And all for less than £1500

So far I'm liking these :
MSI GS60
Razer Blade (2014 model)
The fabled Lenovo y50

What do you think of these.. What else is out there that you heard of which is worth a look?
