Gas Giant Scooping and Military Drives?

Are they still something on the roadmap? Last year there were rumors about military drives that had extended jump ranges? The Gas Giant thing has also been something sorely missing. You could mine for rare and exotic gasses this way. Could it possibly be included in the mining update?

What about Hyperspace misjumps and dark systems, rogue planets? Hyperspace jumps should have .01% or more of a misjump or some debris or unknown object kicking you out of witch space. Then you could find mysterious things and add new places on the map?

This would be a fun way of adding new systems inside the bubble in the black. Exploration should not only be OUTSIDE the bubble. There has to be all sorts of things to still find in habited space!

Like the idea of mis jumps leaving you stranded on a witchspace planet then having to use local materials to enhance your fsd (via synthsesis) to get back into normal space

I quite like the idea of military drives that can't work with a fuel scoop (ie you have to dock for expensive fuel).

However I don't understand where this gas giant scooping idea comes in? We can scoop from main sequence stars but not brown dwarfs, why would we logically be able to scoop from an even smaller ball of gas?

Nothing is known.

Because its cool and DB mentioned it a bunch of times, plus its in the lore.

Seems to be, there's been a few station services that hint at it, such as fuel store and advanced thrusters class and size. I think there's more to come next year as well as alien hybrid stuff hinted at the xpo with the weapons.

I have a feeling that the current crop of armour/shields will become redundant with new thargoid/guardian tech, so they can restart the engineer upgrades so they are not overpowered.

It would be a good way to reboot the engineers and also get rid of the radiculous ships we have now.

As to the Gas Giant scooping, I would like that, and also flying in to the upper atmosphere of the gas giants could be great, scooping for rare gases to sell.

I'm okay with the Rule of Cool :) Wasn't that just flying into their upper atmospheres though? Like Bespin.

I assume so, cant imagine the pressure closer to the core... wasnt there this mockup pic during develpment?

Mis-jumps leaving you stranded in the void definitely need to be a thing, along with some kind of beacon to allow other players to come to your rescue should you not have the fuel to jump back out. It would be nice to come across extra solar planets off the beaten track too, maybe using new long range scanners.

Ah yeah I was thinking this recently.

I'm sure you remember back in the old days gas-giant scooping was a thing. I actually thought it would be nice to have more fuel scoop models; In addition to the current ones there's a much less efficient version that can scoop from Gas Giants (in that, it takes a LOT longer to scoop them), that would be pretty interesting for explorers. You pick the star scoop, faster, but obviously there's some starts you can't scoop, or the Gas Giant scoop, much slower, but most systems have a gas giant, if you're willing to expend the time on it. Also back in the old days you could scoop to your cargo, so you could actually use it to make some money selling Hydrogen fuel you'd mined, as you said it could be part of the mining "profession".

I like the idea of dark systems, but I think we need to wait for the new exploration mechanics before we get anything like that or rogue planets because right now there's just no real mechanism to discover them, would be great though, especially if they stayed as just your discovery (unless other people found them). One of the things I like about other SF franchises is the idea of spacefarers having their own shortcuts or secret routes through places.

I do miss hyperdrive misjumps. in FE2 that's how I used to explore, trigger a misjump and sometimes you'd end up thousands of lightyears away (often with a broken drive lol). I've actually heard of the occasional misjump in ED, though I'm not sure it's true. I've seen at least one case reported where someone jumped almost 80ly on a non-engineered drive and not using neutron boosts, they said the ship reported the now familiar "hyperdrive conduit unstable" message, but this was long before Thargoid hyperdictions. I don't know if misjumps are actually in ED, they're just immensely rare? Either way, with a damaged drive or under certain other rare condition, yes a misjump would be great! We also know it's possible in Lore, since that's what happened to Jaques station.

Witchspace planets?

The original 'witchspace' was from the original Elite (on the BBC computer) where you got caught by the Thargoids (sounds painful!) during your hyperspace jump - i.e. you were in 'witchspace' and they pulled you out of it. Once you had dealt with the thargoid threat (if you could! - they were damned difficult! I know, it happened to me on the BBC!) you were left in space usually somewhere between your departure system and your planned destination system.

The complication was that your hyperspace drive had used all the fuel it needed for the full jump, but you might only be half way there! If you were trying to do a maximum range jump, this could leave you short of fuel to reach ANYWHERE from the point in the black you had been left! Remember, there were no fuel rats to call on in those days! Even now, giving them some deep space coordinates for them to come to your rescue might still be an issue!!
