Can you discover gas giants as other stellar bodies like stars (Your name is displayed as you first discover it)?

I'm looking at 3 gas giants, each has about 5 satellites and none is discovered
Then you can be the first.
As long as you cash in the information before anyone else, if you're a trillion KMs out in the black then you're probably OK, but if you're near the bubble then you might have a competitor or two.
Have you discovered them with the FSS? Or you just see them as UNDISCOVERED on your HUD?
Planets are only discovered once you've correctly tuned your FSS and resolved them in the FSS GUI.
Then, if the planet is REALLY undiscovered (so no other commander's name on it in the System Map), to see your name on it you first need to sell the cartography data at a station.
Yep, important this - it has been a rather important point during the 3.3 release in bubble feeding frenzy.
