Newcomer / Intro Gathering raw material for engineer at asteroid belt

If I'm just looking for engineering material, do I need refinery for belt laser mining? If not, will my limpets take only those raw material ignoring the other chucks flying off the rock??

If you want only materials, then dont fit a refinery.
Just mining lasers and limpets

Your limpets will only pick the materials and not the mining fragments. And you dont have to go through ignore lists.

Yes. What ship do you want to use o that we can propose a load-out?

Arr thank you CMDRs Orzz, I have an ASPX for the purpuse. I think I strip the refinery then.

Edit: Or I'm currently away from my home system, could I just turn the refinery off?

You can always store the refinery at any station that has an outfitting, if you need it at another station later it can be transferred to that stations outfitting for a fee related to its cost.
Or you could sell it for what it cost in the first place.

The good thing about using limpets for engineering materials is that the limpets will ignore anything you have a full allocation of without the need for ignore lists.

Not really helpful, but I'd like to add my two pennies into the debate.
Getting some raw mats is a nice bonus while mining, but mining the belts only for the raw mats doesn't make sense.

Unless you refuse to use an SRV (there are people who can't stand driving them, in which case, yeah, asteroids are an option), getting raw mats from surface outcrops and meteorites is way easier.
Firstly, you will get more mats faster and secondly, you can look at the material composition of a planet and find one that has specific materials you want so it's much easier to gather what you need instead of just random bunch of stuff.

Then there's the hope they'll fix geo sites.

Don't do that. Go laser mining for platinum. That way you get a load od platinum to sell for the same effort and time. You should be able to get 27 mil each trip. Soon you'd have enough for a Python. Then you can farm manufactured materials by blowing up pirates in a low resource extraction site, where they don't fight back. I just sit my ship still and point and shoot at the incoming pirates while my limpets continuously hoover up the materials like they're on a conveyor belt. This also gives you a load of data to trade which you get from the ships you scan.

Whoooaaaa~~ Just travelled almost 1000ly hirarimpt -> maia -> deciat to unlocked Felicity Farseer.

FSD loooong range + clean thrusher + overcharged PP seems work great on my ASPX, can't wait to put them on my Vulture & Chieftain! Thermal resist on shield booster too!!!
