Hardware & Technical GeForce/Shadowplay Alternative ----- OBS Studio

Hi all. In this topic >>> https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...erience-Shadowplay-stopped-working-with-Elite << there is a lot of discussion about issues with GeForce/Shadowplay for making videos and screenshots.

Please, if you have a different alternative, start a new topic so this one can focus on how to get the best Elite Dangerous Horizons performance from OBS in game. Streaming I think should also be a separate topic.

To be very clear, I am a novice. There are likely a number of people who have much more experience and in dept knowledge of the workings of OBS and I hope they will show up here and share their wisdom.

My first problem with OBS is that it will not accept multi-key hot key assignments. This really drove me nuts until I understood it. It would not work with the tried and true ALT-F(x) combinations. What happens is that every other command you use that has either "ALT" or the other key will be picked up by OBS and alter the OBS activity. OBS also doesn't differentiate between "left/right" "shift", "ctrl" or "alt" keys.

So, absent someone demonstrating how to get a multi-key hot key set in a single hotkey line in OBS,, all the OBS hot keys MUST be unique. You cannot even use that key as part of a multi-key command in something like Voice Attack or EDD.

Things I would like to know:

1. Does OBS support "screenshots" if so, how??
2. Can video and audio quality be controlled in modes other than streaming?
3. How do you set up a notification of when OBS is recording while in the game??

Thanks..

Elite has built-in screenshots via F10 (or crazy high-resolution shots via Alt+F10 in solo mode)
2. Can video and audio quality be controlled in modes other than streaming?
You can set different profiles for streaming and local recording in "Output" settings, including some interesting tricks with audio. As an aside, if you have a CPU with "enough" cores, don't even bother with GPU encoding, but use x264; it's way better quality at the cost of a little CPU use.

Thank you. I only knew about the crazy high resolution screenshots.

At present I am only interested in LOCAL recording. Yes, STREAMING allows what looks like significant control of the video guality but that doesn't seem to be available in LOCAL

#3 I found a plugin that plays a little chime when I start and stop recording. I'll post a link when I fire up that computer, but yes, that can be done.

Maybe another plug in would change your hot key problem??

Heres a link for srbeep.

You get a REP since that lead me to this >>> https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/categories/obs-studio-plugins.6/ << and it turns out there are a lot of plugins including a game overlay though it has a dependency on a $29.00 application.

Not seeing anything for the hot key issue, but I have identified a key that I don't ever expect to use for anything else when I would have OBS running.

I can't help with fullscreen as I run borderless, but in my case I have to do these steps to get the button press recording to work.

1. start obs
2. click obs window anywhere to make sure its the main highlighted window
3. click ED window anywhere
4. recording start/stop works ever after

Hi all.. Here is a link to a folder that has some screenshots of my settings and some unedited video so you van judge for yourself whether OBS might work for you.

The real trick was finding a single key that is not used for anything else in the game. Turned out that F12 was tied to SILENT RUNNING so I changed it in the game to ALT-F12.

I run all my video controls by Voice Attack.

The Screenshots were taken with LightScreen which works both in and out of the game.

OBS also works both in and out of the game.

I have reduced the shutter sound during recording from the triple series to a single and lowered the volume.

I would recommend recording at 60 FPS, that reduces perceived stutter a lot, especially on or around planets or stations where your frame rate may dip; IME, 720p60 will generally look better than 1080p30.

If you want something that's more convenient, you could take a look at XSplit Gamecaster, that comes with its own overlay and generally should "integrate" better. It's not cheap though.

The videos were recorded at 1920X1080 60 FPS BiCubic (16 samples) with the game set to 1920X1080 60 using a GTX 745 OEM. I rarely record anything as long as these and during the in space segments all the fans were running at full speed in the 990.

These were completely unedited raw video and I was actually quite surprised at how well they look given my hardware and flaky rural internet connection.

I record game stuff mostly so I can review what I did during an encounter and look for ways I can do better.

If there is anyway to configure OBS easily?

I came to know OBS last year, but up to now, its interface is still hard to configure. How can I make it simplified?

I am now using a free screen recorder ShowMore, it works great. But it does not have a streaming function.

So I hope I can back to use OBS.

In case you also want to use ShowMore, I put an URL here.

I can't simply the interface, but I can walk you through the configuration of the program, and once you have it configured, it's extremely simple to use.
