Newcomer / Intro General Assassination Question

So when I get a mission to assassinate a General, this recent one was named Gen. Costa, you go to the Unidentified Signal Sources and usually you'll be told to let the general escape and give you a down payment. (Which is highly, highly, non-motivational to let this General go. I'd rather risk my life to get paid for assassinating the General over getting 15k for letting him go. That's not bribery.)
Anyways, I seem to find them glitched, or not doing them correctly. How do you let the Generals get away, exactly? Can anyone answer that question for me?

Just let the mission expire or abandon it then go collect your alternative payment.

You can abandon missions in the transactions tab on your left-hand UI panel.

Careful though - abandoning missions gives your Rep a fair thwack with the faction that issued them. Very quickly you'll find yourself on unfriendly terms with them, and it's a lot of work to get back to neutral.

Well, I have figured out that I can actually stop the contract from ever being updated.
It's totally worth the 400cr bounty on you, since you can pay it off, and then kill the guy for the bounty.

Assassination complete :D

How did you do that ? Shoot on sight?

Well, you'll know to pull out your weapons, and when they start saying "We've been watching you... blah blah blah" then you know to shoot them once and bail.

THEN, from then on, you'll be forced to face an ELITE rank Federal Dropship. If you destroy it, you'll not only be fined, but rewarded as if you assassinated the General.
I figured that out in my vulture, when I destroyed the Federal Dropship and the contract was complete.
