The thing is, with all these comparisons to SC and NSM, this isn't a zero-sum game!
It really doesn't matter that much what SC can do or what NSMs didn't do that we thought it might. The fact is, the whole genre is richer because these games exist. I'm sure we'll see even more realistic looking worlds in ED because of the fantastic imagery we saw in SC. I'm sure SC will get a bigger more expansive galaxy because of ED, and I'm sure NMS has shown everybody how you can attempt to do the really challenging stuff like life and almost-kinda pull it off.
The fact is, many of us will probably play several if not all of these games. Maybe we'd wish our favourite one had feature X from game Y, but that doesn't mean we'll stop playing it. I for one can barely consider games that don't have EDs level of VR support - but at the same time 1st person walking around gameplay scares the socks off me because I know I'll get nausea.
A rising tide floats all boats, and increased competition and quality is beneficial for players of all these games.
