General Joystick config question.

Apologies if covered in other threads, I have had a look and either missed it or not understood it.

As much as I'm enjoying the game with the keyboard / mouse setup I've been trying to force myself to use a crappy Saitek ST90 Joystick to get use to it, I've never really used one before and am looking at maybe getting a Thrustmaster with the seperate throttle control.

But, my question is is this. Is the Generic joystick (in options) all there is in terms of config for the joystick ? I don't seem to have any Z axis control and have to still use the keyboard, will a better joystick fix this, or have I missed the point entirely ?

Thanks as always

You can configure any axis to control all aspects of the ship. I have pitch/roll/yaw/thrust up,down, lateral. blah blah blah, it's all there. At the moment i am using a HOTAS, pedals and some flight sim gear to control thruster's in Landing mode

You can tweak the configuration as much as you like. The "Generic joystick" in options is just a PRESET, you can change each action/button/axis the individually.

Want to use button2 (whatever that happens to be on the stick) for yaw right? Click on the box next to "Yaw right" and the press button2 - voilá!
Want to use x-axis for throttle? click on the box nex to "Throttle axis" and pull the stick.
etc. etc. etc.

BTW, looks like the ST90 has only 2 analog axes, so you have to assign buttons or keyboard keys or mouse for other axes than the two you prefer for stick push/pull & left/right.
