General Rift Question

Hi,

Sorry for this being a general question rather than ED specific. I have placed an order for a rift, mainly so that I can play ED on it.

I'm a bit confused about how this will work in terms of connections.

My current machine has a Nvidia GTX780 graphics card with 3 monitors running side by side. Also running Corei7 4770K.

A couple of questions I have are:

1) Will I need to unplug one of my monitors in order to plug in the Rift?

2) If so, will the other monitors still work while I am using the rift? Will I be able to show the ED activity on the monitors (for someone else to look at for example) whilst I am playing on the rift, or is that not possible?

3) Is my setup sufficient to have a good experience? I want to make sure I have sufficient hardware to power the rift (probably should have done that before ordering but I assumed that since this is a pretty new high spec machine should not be an issue).

thanks
Patrick.

Hi

I have 2 screens + Rift, and in my case I just setup in Nvidia Control panel that Rift becomes primary and one screen is off. This works the best for me. When not used I switch the Rift off, and second screen comes automatically on. I just found it less complicated this way. By the time you get yours they may fix the direct mode and all of this will not be necessary :)
You can display what you see in Rift on secondary display by adding few lines to your config file in ED
780 should be good enough.

I have same card & processor, but with two monitors, so I reckon my experience is relevant to your situation...

Yes. The rift needs the HDMI port, unless you have a HDMI/DVI adapter. One of your monitors will have to be disconnected...

2) If so, will the other monitors still work while I am using the rift? Will I be able to show the ED activity on the monitors (for someone else to look at for example) whilst I am playing on the rift, or is that not possible?

The other monitors will still be active. For E : D, there is a config file 'hack' described somewhere around here which will mirror the rift display to your monitor. Mirroring for other demos/games is case specific...

EDIT : Here's the thread for setting up mirroring : http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=43396

You should be fine with your current setup. Generally speaking, a bit of fiddling with display options is required to get the best out of the rift, but once you get it set up properly... There's plenty of good advice in the various threads here to help you...
