This may be a tall order, but is there a way that any significant mountains or canyons could be named or marked in some way so that they can be found more easily instead of simply by chance/word of mouth? Perhaps there could be a specific way to submit discoveries, so when you stumble upon a fab canyon for racing, for example, you could record it/make it known - to you (FD) and/or the community.
I guess they would need to be of a certain minimum width/length/depth to qualify. If they did qualify it might help your exploration rank too.
'Geological points of interest' could then be found by anyone by:
- Looking at the planet view in the system map (like for surface bases).
- Searching for either in the 'local' area of the galaxy map (say, 50ly).
- In station services, similar to local bounties - 'local hotspots' - with the planet and coordinates.
Naturally it would be a challenge to have a system of marking them that is scalable to the galaxy, but you've managed it with planetary bodies
You might also want to hand-name certain ones yourselves, if they would be ideal for in-game races.
This may be going too far, but I thought I'd share my idea.
