Geological Signals

I recently updated Elite Dangerous Frontier ver. 3.8 to ver. 4.0.
Checked "GD 140 A 1 A" in "GD 140" system to find some geological signals in System Map.

There are 3 GEOLOGICAL signals in "GD 140 A 1 A" in Frontier 4.0.

There are 15 GEOLOGICAL signals in "GD 140 A 1 A" in Frontier 3.8.

I checked some other planets and found the same situation. Any planet that has GEOLOGICAL signal in Frontier 4.0 shows always 3 GEOLOGICAL signals. Any planet that has GEOLOGICAL signal in Frontier 3.8 shows much more than 3 GEOLOGICAL signals.
When I flew close to a planet and scanned the planet using the SURFACE SCAN my External Panel didn't show any GEOLOGICAL signal at all (Frontier ver. 4.0).

In 3.8 signals are "fake cartoonish", meaning ... it's just farm point.
In 4.0 everything is more scientific (that's why FPS is worse, bigger part of GPU is used for the science). On your screens it shows that there are 3 different of "things" you can find in whole planet. When you do DSS it will show "blue map", it's yes/no. In blue zones you MAY find item selected on filter in DSS, no color - it is "NO find".

We should mention it's certainly not always 3 either, sometimes 2 and juts the occaisional 1, but if there's more that one the DSS map gives you options to click through different types, of course with geo it's mostly the same areas but bio varies hugely.

Yeh, I was telling about his example with "3 signals" on screenshot.

Correct me if I'm wrong since I didn't do much rock farming in EDO.

There are basically only 3 geo types no matter what planet you land on (if it has volcanic activity).
1) Fumaroles
2) Geysers
3) Lava spouts

So you won't see more than 3 geo signals on a planet.

They are classed under fumeroles as far as I know, that is literally what a fumerole is, a gas vent.
In the game vents are a separate geo type to fumeroles.

The question is does it appear as a serarate item in the DSS, I have only ever seen a maximum of 3 geo sites on planets, never 4.

I've never seen all 4 on one planet, but i have seen vents as their own type in the DSS, although their distribution is (almost?) always exactly the same as the geysers or fumeroles.

Yeah that's quite common, but I would expect to come across at least some planets with 4 signals by now if 4 was possible, strange that I haven't.

Just my opinion. But the whole raw mats thing is borked!
The heat map is pants.
It's a bloody mess.
The crystal forest is the answer till they fix it all. Same for exobio (borked map)

You got used to cartoon "farm points" in Horizons like "bread grows on the trees".
In Ody it is scientific distribution, like in real life. Now you need to know the truth that bread does not grow on trees and how to make it.
I like it.

True.
Hence my suggestion, the forest being the lesser of 2 evils.
But yes I did most of my raws on the fly so to speak, still do.
But annually its a trip to the forest for me hehehe.

It's not a heatmap. You have to check for planetary biomes and then figure out where the volcanism is more dense. Often you have cones in abundance over the surface and there you find the higher density of spouts. Some planets are generally more densely covered than others, though I can't say whether you can evaluate that before physically checking out the surface. May be connected to planet size or just a seed. And the best vehicle from my experience to collect crystals is a Sidewinder with a laser to cut off the crystals and collect them from the ground. It's the only ship small enough to get in between the vents.

It's referred to as the heatmap. A play on words hehe. But yes true it isn't. I'm at ecologist rank, I've read the map many times.
And it's vague at best. Just think it needs sorting.

Fair enough! And how do you actually fin them? I have scanned and got the blue heat map, but cant find anything.....
