Geology formations and other newbie explorer questions

Hi folks, relatively new player here only playing since Crimbo. Had the game before but quit after a week as I couldnt get to grips with flying mouse and keyboard, iv since gotten a hotas and am now in love.

I spent my first few weeks bounty hunting to learn how to fly but know very little of the game beyond that. So Iv saved up enough to build a Vulture and an Asp Explorer, if also dipped my toes into engineering and have done lvl 1 on my asps fsd. Iv decided to see what else there is out there other than pewpewing so iv planned my first real trip outside the bubble. I'm about 3k into 30k round trip and am having a blast, throwing on the tunes and scanning, probing etc.. ( btw Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome mix goes ridiculously well with this job).

Anyway if been discovering planets with geological formations, so far they've all been those tall rocks you shoot minerals off of, I have only been visiting one site per planet (some have had over forty) should I be visiting all the sites on a planet or are they likely to be the same formations at each one? Also are there other varieties to find on other worlds as iv only come across the same ones so far.

Also what should I be looking out for to make this trip profitable (beyond the fun I'm having) when I get back.... if I get back

Appreciate the help oh and good to meet you.

the biological and geological sites all contain some materials which are present on that planet (there is a list in the system map showing whats available on that planet) but chances are you wont find anything different at another location on the same planet they might be different visually though, but yes other planets contain other materials of course!

Dont bother checking multiple sites on one planet, you can mix up biological and geological signals on the same planet as there's a few different types to see.

Cartography credits - Earth like worlds and water worlds pay the most, ammonia worlds offer good income, along with HMC worlds especially with atmospheres, once you have explored a bit, and found a few earth like worlds, you will get the bug for finding rarer and rarer stuff just for the view, for example a ringed earth world with a landable moon within the ring is a pretty spectacular site.

to be honest if you jut scan your way looking for stuff you will usually get a decent income without "grinding" for a certain planet type, sometimes i just go looking for canyons, or bio/geo sites in nebula just to see some of the great places in the game, and they usually earn me a decent payout upon returning, but dont get me wrong its not a lucrative credit per hour income, the time spent in game travelling is quite significant, but id be exploring anyway, so getting an income for it is welcome.

dont forget there is also some stella phenomenon out there to go visit too and they also bring in credits and are pretty cool to look at, even if they are quite far away from each other.

here's a video of some of the great stuff out there in the void;

Just a nod 'in case'... remember to use your Composition Scanner (SRV or Ship) when you get to Bio or Geo sites as this will gain you a few extra credits and hopefully record the 'find' in the CODEX for you too - if only letting you know you've 'seen' the stuff - then, if you are interested in finding others you should be able to look them up.

Good to meet you, too (y)

you can have up to 3 different geological formation types on a planet. for exampel: fumarole, vents and geysers. no more than three. the ingame codex gives you some pics how different they look.

also terrain might create some screenshots opportunities - gas vents on the wall of a steep canyon ... fumaroles with green steam on a pinkish surface ... stuff like that.

Awesome that's what I was wondering, so there can be different types on one planet. Cheers dude.
