Geriatric Commander

I last played on the BBC B with my teenage sons, and even then they did not show a respectful attitude to my 'skill'.

I have just had a go at the Beta single player and after a lot of luck managed to shoot one waste canister (I think). There must be a better way than random movement until one comes into range.:S

Seriously, the controls are daunting. Some simulators have a cut down simple set to start with, and a preset set of keys would help us oldies. Also a very simple mission to start with, just to get used to the controls. Many commanders, like me, are not quite as quick as we were in BBC B days. The hot shots could just ignore these features for old idiots.

Welcome to the forum,

Don't worry too much I'm sure it will all come back in time.

Have fun though and see you in space.

You will get used to it. It's easier than docking in the original BBC version and it's great fun. From one geriatric to another (I am 61).

Hi and welcome John! You are not alone age-wise. There are many of us "originals" around on the forums, being a 60 year old myself. It is a bit of a steep learning curve, but it does come with a bit of practice. I'm still waiting for a pre-ordered joystick to arrive. The keys/mouse control is pretty versatile but a bit too fiddly for me. Just get accustomed to the idea that you go through a few ships before things start to get familiar! Stick with it John. It seems ED is shaping up nicely to be become a real adventure 😉

JOhn also check out some of the tutorial videos on you tube, especially if you are using keyboard and mouse. It will greatly enhance your enjoyment if you take a look at some of these, as they will get you over any initial frustration and some difficult learning curves.

Kroy's videos are really helpful for this:

Well I'm a young whipper snapper at 57 then ;)
Managed to get to Elite all those years ago

A decent joystick (I use a Saitek 52Pro) makes ED much more fun :D

Unfortunately, my flying skills and reactions are sometimes let down by my bifocals and Trackir... Is that a space station?... blam!!!!

Thank goodness there are older players who will be playing ED whilst retaining fond memories of 'the good 'ol days'. I was thinking that maybe I should have grown up by now, my OH certainly thinks so.

I'm yet to start in ED, waiting for the SB to begin but I'm glad there'll be more than just me crashing into things while trying to nonchalantly look as though we know what we're doing!

Here's to all us geriatrics :D

I recently read something that said if you haven't grown up by 50 then you don't have to. :)

You have my respect sir!

42 here, with a BBC B sat right next to me in working order.

Growing older is inevitable .... growing up is a choice! :)

To the OP - Welcome to the forums and the game.

I am another member of the Over Fifties Federation (OFF) and its great to see new members.

Perhaps we should all carry a decal proclaiming us as members of the OFF. So people understand when we smash into their ship because we didn't see it (bad eyes), didn't hear it (bad hearing), couldn't get out of the way in time (bad reflexes) or maybe it was just the case that we couldn't press the keys/stick fast enough (arthritis)

Regardless, ED is shaping into a game that young and old play together. I am looking forward to playing with my kids and likely grandchildren.
