Get a HOTAS and Oculus Rift!

As soon as Rift CV1 is available I'm buying it. The very same day. No question about it.

When it's plug n play I'll buy in. Mostly, I want high res and better GPU tech which will be coming to drive it.

What most impresses me is how we can maneuver the ship with the rift. Because of the full 3D view you can just fly circles around people literally and they are TIGHT ROUND circles lol. I used to LIVE off of the docking computer in beta as it was so boring docking but with the rift I love it and enjoy blasting into the bay and looking around at the other ships.

It's even started to be like Top Gear in space, "oooh look a Python taking off next to me....sexy ship, can't wait to afford that!" etc. The rift makes you so aware of your surroundings.

Once ED gives us the ability to change the font colour of the HUD to green it should be MUCH easier to see the text.

I'm with you on the hotas, but the Oculus is a piece of garbage imo. Why would I cripple the video prowess of my 780ti SLI config and a 27" ips panel at 2560 resolution to grossly scale it down with the Oculus? No thx.

There's no comparison between 2D screens and VR, I flew with trackIR & high res screens for years (and loved it). With the rift you are inside the game & everything is full size 360 degrees 1920x1080 and 3D.

Fair enough many want to wait for the CV1, but to call it garbage shows you have either never tried it or tried one with incorrect IPD setup or the wrong lenses. I'm sitting in a Lakon type-7 right now, the bridge is bigger than your average London house , I can make out every little scratch & cable, and the door at the back of the bridge is over 20ft away from me. No matter how high of a resolution your monitor is, you can never actually sit in the ship, so it's pointless trying to compare the two.

I could say that playing on monitors is garbage now, but that would be a little childish. It's purely down to preference.

I was very torn about ordering a dk2 this year. I had a go on a mates dk2 a few months ago and I was a bit underwhelmed by it. I totally get the feeling of "being there" in the world, that is undeniably a massive pull for the technology and is a huge indescribably intense difference to playing on a flat screen. However it's resolution is very grainy and diminishes the wow factor by a comparably intense difference for me. Maybe it wasn't setup properly.

If they can bring the resolution issue into focus if you'll excuse the pun then this tech is utterly game changing and a must for any enthusiast.

WARNING: Once you go RIFT, it is really hard to go back.

I have a triple screen setup I've built for DCS and the like, and have been into the VR scene since DK1. Originally, I tried ED on my screens, but switched to VR. After a while I figured I'd check out triple wide again, but my god, I can't go back! Everything feels so distant and flat. To me, 3D doesn't really blow my mind, I just adjust to it and forget it is there, but once it is gone, oh boy.

To anyone who might wonder:
-Track IR is great, but is NOTHING to almost flawless 1 to 1 tracking
-Triple wide, high def screens look nice, but they can't touch the feeling of being there that VR gives you
-Traditional 3D (3D vision) isn't even close. I've never used it in ED, but in other uses, it is a silly gimmick in comparison

I know there is a lot of talk about how mind blowing VR is, but take it from me and the thousands of others, it is really and truly a game changer. It isn't a gimmick. All those silly little things you worried about before (I can't see my keyboard or drink! I'll look silly!) go out the window in your first 30 seconds. Find a person near by who has one and try it. I'm sure someone is out there, but I've never met or heard of anyone who has tried it and not been impressed, often giddy with excitement.

On Subject: With a good HOTAS, you really don't need your keyboard unless you are searching a system name or chatting with someone. I have an old X45 that is 8 years old. It still works! Actually, I think every button and axis works too, it is just a bit crusty and ugly as sin. I also have an X52 (non-pro) that still works. The twist rudder freaks out, but otherwise it works great. Not worth flying with before the magnet mod though. But once you fly with a TM Warthog, the Saitek stuff feels like a plastic toy from a gumball machine. If you can find a way to get one, do it.

My only concern with buying a Rift is that I cannot see the real world.

  • Anyone can sneak up behind me
  • I'd look like a schizophrenic looking around with joysticks in my hands
  • Probably induces myopia (short-sightedness) with prolonged use

Comments? I'm curious.

1. First thing I said to my girlfriend was 'don't sneak up on me.... Seriously, never sneak up on me or the joke's going to end very badly....' That was the first few day's of using the rift, now I don't care, even with headphones and speakers I can hear if someone opens the door to my office.

2. Who cares what other people think you look like, you're playing in your own home right? We have friends over, they have all had a go on the rift. I've never thought 'oh, Jody/kayleigh looks like a dumb ass with that thing on..' Sounds like your being a bit paranoid dude.

3. Do some research, it's better then looking at a 2D monitor, your focus is into the distance because it looks like you're are actually there. Not staring into a flat screen. With that being said, too much of anything is a bad thing, I doubt 12 hours in the rift each day, every day is a good thing.

* Haha yeah I was concerned about that before I got my Oculus last year. I figured I'd need one of those bells that newsagents have on their front doors to alert them to when customers come into their shop or something.
As it turns out for me anyway, I'd still hear them coming, or feel them coming from the wind they create as they walk about and push air around (which I imagine blind people must have a keen sense of) or simply feel a draught when a door is opened. Having said that Ive been cuaght completely unawares many times :)

* When you wear the Rift it takes only seconds before you've completely stopped caring about what you look like to others. And besides, are you not secure enough in yourself to allow yourself to enjoy this incredible new tech without worrying about what you look like in your own home? Life's too short for worrying about that man! ;)

* Youtube Michael Abrash talk to get some insights into how this tech works. Its far far more researched and understood than I think you realise. As someone else pointed out, its actually easier for your eyes as they focus naturally into the distance like in real life, unlike when you stare at a 2D screen monitor and yoru focus is forced.

TL;DR Check it out for yourself, its definitely worth a go! :)
