Get mission shootdown enemies, find enemy, offers me abandon mission, now can't finish mission. !??!

So I have had this happen to me multiple times -

Im in a bulletin board. Accept a mission to kill 2 pilots in a system. This time they happened to be freighters. I launch. First USS I find I slow down and go in. Wallah...! A NPC freighter, I prepare to open fire. In the comms window he tells me repeatedly if I let him live he'll give me 700 credits or something. I look to the left and my mission is updated with abandon kill 2 x and y. It's as if it AUTO selectes for me to do the ALTERNATIVE an do what this guy wants. I want to do the ORIGINAL missoin and hunt the 2 guys down.

I shoot him down. Now I have a 4,000 bounty, no credit for killing 1 of the 2 ships, and on my transaction screen it says abandon blah blah and it is not the original mission. I NEVER abandoned the mission or decided anything.

What is going on??!?! Thanks peeps : )

a tip for avoiding this, although you'll take a small fine/bounty hit, is to SHOOT the ship offering the alternative mission BEFORE your log is updated. first time I tried this I was repeating "shutupshutupshutup..." so I shot at him to shut him up and wallah, no alternative mission and I could go on my merry way.

small edit: you only have to shoot the ship and aggro it, you don't have to kill it.

Thank you! Jesus, its so silly that THIS is the mechanic? I am on a 10 second timer? I mean christ it is really fast that this happens.

Anyone else want to chime in please?!

Thanks!

Its just an offer to abandon the mission, just go on your merry way and complete the original mission, if you abandon it you will actually have to go to a station mentioned to get an alternate reward

well, after my last post here it happened to me AGAIN. I take the mission for 3 targets. Find an Unidentified Signal Source. It is one of my targets. As the initial guy in this thread I opened fire on him as fast as I could get him in my sights. I had to circle around and get him in view. In those few seconds, he already made me an offer to pay me a bounty (which is like 700 vs 13000 for the mission) and I just opened fire as fast as I could.

Same thing. Mission ruined. Can't finish it. It says to meet him (even though he's dead) in some location at another station to collect my 700.

Very very frustrating this has happened to me THREE times and I LOVE this game.

ANYONE out there have a solution or do we bount;y hunters and combat pilots just have to ignore all combat missions like this...which are pretty much the MAIN ones!???!

HELP : )

I had this happen to me, and I ignored his alternative mission and finished killing pirates. Only problem was that it didn't count because my mission status was changed. I never accepted anything, I just went along and tried to finish the first mission to no avail. :(

I think a way to avoid this problem is to buy a FSD Interdicter and pull pirates out of Super Cruise, instead of looking for them at USS.

It's confusing because it appears that the original mission is gone, but it is not. Once you kill an appropriate target, the counter will show itself again. I had this happen to me with a kill pirates mission, and it took me a while to figure out that I could still complete the original mission.

It doesn't mess up your mission at all.

If you look at the new mission in the transaction tab the original mission is there still, plus the alternative option is -also listed-.

You can still go right ahead and do the original mission without a problem.

Somethign that seems to exacerbate the misconception that it ruins the original mission automatically is that the one guy who shows up and offers you the alternate is technically one of the targets, but because he is a special spawn just to offer the alternate mission, he doesn't count if you kill him.

Just keep on hitting USSes and find the ones with your original targets and you can do the mission without a problem.

That didn't work for me. I had to kill 2 pirates. I killed one, then stopped at another USS, got offered a new mission and I ignored it and continued on with the original mission. I killed the 2nd pirate and it did not update. I flew around for about 30 minutes and went back to the starport where I got the mission, and could not turn it in.

When you say you 'killed the second pirate' do you mean the one who offered you the alternate mission? Those don't count. You need to leave that USS and find another one, and then your targets will be in those.

The one who offers you the alternate mission is 'special' and doesn't count in the target category, even though they are clearly a member.

I decided to accept the alternate offer, as it was just in a neighbouring system.
But even after repeatedly trying over the space of a couple of hours, I was never able to claim the cash.

Anyone else had this? Is it a bug, or perhaps I was lied to, and should have gone back and killed him 😀

As ElleShaped said or sort of...You may not have killed the correct pirate. I just finished a mission to take out 7 pirates and I had to shoot down way more than 7 to reach the 7. Probably due to belonging to a different faction. Oh and 30 mins may not have been long enough. I just spent a few hours hunting in anarchy systems.:D

What was the alternate offer, exactly?

It was something along the lines of, "... Meet me at XXX station and I'll help you escape your life of crime"

I went to the station, but couldn't turn in the mission.
I thought that there might be another part, so hung around near the station in case he turned up as another USS, but didn't find anything.

Ah. Haven't seen that one yet, sorry. Ca'n't offer any advice on it :/

The update to your mission log is confusing because it puts the counter offer text over the original mission specs. Basically, just keep going and you will complete the original mission. Don't click 'abandon' (that's the original).

In that case then the Npc did his job. He stopped you from completing yours. So you lost reward, rep with the faction that gave you the contract and more than likely got fined if you let the mission timer run out. Had this happen to me too but in beta. If it's not a kill others then it is more than likely just a decoy to stop you. Just my take on it I have no real back up to this idea.

Then the missions on the Bulletin board need to start specifying what faction it is needed. Not just "pirates". if its just "pirates" then any should count. If it needs to be of a certain faction, then specify.
