Getting a HOTAS going

Hey there.

At the moment Im using the Logitech extreme 3d pro and the logitech g13 for all my controls in elite and star citizen. The setup works quite well but Im having a hard time controling the throttle precisely and some people have recommended to get a HOTAS setup. I looked at the selection, which seems to be not all that great, and the saitek x52 seems to be the common choice. Have do not have 300 or more to drop on a hotas so the Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog is definitely out of my range. The thing is that the x52 (pro or not) get a lot of bad reviews and if im spending more that 100€ on computer equipment im expecting a certain level of quality which saitek is appearently unable to deliver.

But why would I want to buy a full hotas setup when I have 50% ot it allready (the joystick)?!

So what Im wondering is: Is there a seperate throttle controll (other than the CH Throttle Pro) that is reliable and maybe under 150€?

I rolled with a Logitech 3D since 2008. And only recently bought a Warthog Hotas.

But it even then I put away the throttle quad and roll with my old Saitek Throttle quad.

The Saitek throttle quad is perfect for ww2 propeller planes and is surprisingly suitable for Elite.
I have comfortable throw on the forward back, and have vertical thrust mapped to the red lever.

dont know where there getting this bad press for saitek
i have the 52 pro for a while and it's solid , never had a problem with it
and it has more hats and buttons than you need , you can even double up with trigers to give you more if needed
not that i ever have , i think the saitek is a great bit of hotas ( pun)

I can vouch for that one too. I used it for almost 800hrs, and though I got my X52 out again for the desktop PC, I'd say comparably the T.Flight still holds its own for gameplay, its only failing being not enough buttons as the X52. If you have a keyboard set in between this isn't too much of an issue, but the cable length between the separable throttle and stick isn't very generous, barely accomodatng a full size keyboard.

However, the build quality of this unit and ergonomics are really great so it's very good value for money. It's my go to device if I switch back to gaming on the TV and need a stick.

I think the bad press comes from the large fluctuation of the product that saitek is offering. a few people on amazon had to return their x52s up to 3 times before getting a decent model. also the ps2 connectors tend to be very lose. featurewise it would be my first pick. i like the look and the lights and in combination with my g13 it could be the perfect setup. i wouldnt even have to you my keyboard anymore haha.

if i could be certain that the x52 would deliver what it is promising id buy it in a heartbeat. But when amazon (germany) even puts a note on the product page that they are currently investigating problems with the x52 pro one really gets souspicious...

in the yellow box it says that amazon is currently not selling it anymore due to customer complaints of it being basically crap

You can regularly find a used X52 throttle side only on ebay cheap. Before I had the whole setup, I had just the throttle I had bought for around $50USD. The X52 throttle side will work standalone whereas the stick side will not.

Is it possible to set up the throttle by itself and plug a different joystick like the extreme 3d in another port then with elite? If so, that could be a solution for me as I find the X52 stick just a bit too much movement required to get full pitch etc

My X52 must be 5 years or more old now, and I've never had a problem with it. I bought mine back with Saitek were their own concern. I heard recently though, that there have been quality problems since MadCatz bought up Saitek.

I have a Logitech joystick like yours, but I kept it when I got my Thrustmaster HOTAS. I use the Logitech joy as it has many more buttons and Thrustmaster throttle. Works great.

Bought the X52 Pro during Alpha… Wow was my initial reaction since I'd never used one before makes the game so much more playable… Well worth the investment and not had an issue to-date! If you have some spare cash get yourself a head tracker…

I do have the trackir5 headtracker and it is awesome. but that is not the issue here.

I also came across the planned cooperation between cig and saitek to build a star citizen themed modular hotas system. looks pretty cool and ill probably wait how that one will turn out before making a call to buy one. investung 120€ in a product that seems to have that many problems is just too risky for me at this point.
