Hardware & Technical Getting a pc for Elite Dangerous

Okay, so i haven't been playing a any games in pc for ages...but yesterday i saw on youtube this elite dangerous and suddenly im this
excited kid again :) so now i need to upgrade but since i dont know much about the hardware so i could use a bit help in the process.

Quick check my local store tells me about 2 different options at glance:

1st option has AMD FX-670K 3.7 GHz as cpu 12GB ram and Nvidia GTX 745 / 4 GB and the price tag is 949€
i guess this would give smooth gaming experience??

but the second option im wonderring is a bit cheaper with Intel Core i5-4460S 2.9GHz 8GB ram and Nvidia GTX 745 / 4 GB
and it comes with a 749€ pricetag would this give any good experience? ....the reason im not sure which to pick because i could
prolly use that extra 200€ and some to get my self Oculus Rift and i would assume that would be AWESOME =)

which way would you go? or perhaps any other suggestions :)

Okay, what would be good setup or just card if i wanted to use oculus rift with it ...it just sounds so awesome ;-)

okay so i have again two possibilities after checking some more :)

and this time the first one is:


  • CPU: INTEL Core i7-4790K 4,0 GHz LGA1150
  • Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Performance - DDR3 1866MHz - 2 x 8GB
  • GPU: Asus Strix GeForce GTX 970 - 4GB GDDR5

and the second one


  • CPU: AMD FX-8350 4,0 GHz, turbo 4,2 GHz
  • Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Performance - DDR3 1866MHz - 2 x 8GB
  • GPU: Asus Radeon R9 290 4GB

which one would you guys choose....as i mentioned above, i will be using Oculus Rift ...if it matters ...thanks for help in advance and merry christmas for everyone :)

Depends on the price - I assume the first one is much more expensive. Either should give you a good experience but the Intel CPU is a lot better though it doesn't appear to matter as much in this game.

On the main website there are the minimum requirements for the game iam currently playing it on a laptop Hp Pavilion from 2013 and its working just exelent . below i put the minimum specs.


Minimum recommended hardware specification:
Direct X 11
Quad Core CPU ( 4 x 2Ghz is a reasonable minimum)
4 GB System RAM (more is always better)
DX 10 hardware GPU with 1GB video ram Nvidia GTX 260
ATI 4870HD

Internet connection

Supported Operating Systems:
Windows 7.x
Windows 8.x

The first PC has a better processor, but for ED I don't think you'd see much difference as the game is pretty good at using more than 4 cores so the FX-8350 will still do well.

I'm a huge fan of intel/nvidia combo's, worked best in my experience (driver/reliability wise) so I'd go for door number 1.
I'm using a I7 3770k/970gtx combination myself and the game runs great.

I've heard ASUS's RMA process is a very painful experience so that's something to consider, however both myself and my dad gave used ASUS motherboards exclusively for the last 15 years (probably bought about 20x between us) and I've never had to RMA anything but if you google it, it's worrying! FYI, EVGA seems to have the best and I've been buying a lot of their stuff recently because of that.

An i7 and a GTX970 should be an ideal combination for a reasonable setup. Should handle 1080p no problem and you can experiment with DSR on the 970 too. DSR is essentially a full screen anti-aliasing method as the game renders the viewport at a higher resolution than your monitor and the image is then scaled down. This makes for some nice images, much better than the built in AA and AIO filters but requires some graphical grunt.

What resolution do you want to play on? I would list my specs but they're not going to be relevant for anyone with a modicum of common sense when buying PCs!

Also worth considering building a PC as they're pretty straight forward to assemble and can save you a few bob.
