Getting away, advice please

Hi all,

Started the beta a couple of days ago. Day 1: couldn't beat the single player combat missions, day 2 got three pvp kills...

I'm loving it.

However, it seems that in my sidewinder if the fight starts to go bad, I can't get out of it, I set up an opposite vector and try to extend with power to shields and thrust (though I'm usually out of shields at the point I try and run), but don't seem to be able to get out of range before long-range laser fire finishes me off.

I have tried barrel rolling - rolling while triggering off-axis thrust - but it doesn't seem to make much difference. When shooting other ships, the barrel roll doesn't make a huge difference to whether I hit at long range.

Is it just that I'm going to have to fight to the death, or do I need to stay in close orbiting until my warp drive is charged and then do a runner?

Any other tactical hints would be well received.

Silent Running is your friend. Get yourself a heat-sink ejector and you'll be able to survive longer to escape.

It stops anything from locking onto your ship whilst it is activated, makes you go fuzzy on the scanners, and so makes for an excellent system of escape, because now your pursuer can only fire on you without any gimble assistance. ;)

Also if your still fairly close when you decide to bug out, bull rush them with max pips and throttle and just keep going. Often by the time they come around to sight you again your well on your way out of range. Just keep boosting!

Won't work too well on experienced pilots, but NPCs and the not so talented...

Divert all power to engines and boost away in one direction. Once you get far enough away from a ship you can activate super cruise. If they brake off there attack you can divert power to systems and recharge your shields.

Nah thats a good technique for sure and combined with silent running can be quite effective. Just hope the other guy doesn't have a much faster ship.. hehe:smilie:

Indeed. Choose your direction, boost up, all pips to engine, boost again, and go silent.

If it's really hairy shut all systems down and just tumble away.

The bad side of that, of course, is if another Commander is really determined to blow you up, and he can see you, you are pretty much dead meat.
