Getting back after a year - a lot has changed

Hi all - I've fired ED up today after the best part of a year. Although a lot has changed it looks pretty much the same, but how do I find a planet that has a planetary map (as I'm assuming I can land on these)?

In the system map, the ones with a blue semi-circle surrounding them are land-able, if there are a few bars pointing up from it, there will be somewhere to dock.

i.e (from google images, since I have no screenshots at the moment)

Be sure to take a few missions. Everything about missions is a lot better than it was a year ago, and in my opinion they're really fun and once you've gained some local rep they'll earn you a few million credits quickly.

Watch out for the NPCs, they aren't pushovers anymore. Not too hard to kill but don't assume shield-less or weak shielded ships are ok anymore. If you need to get pointers on outfitting just ask. Interdictions are way up if you are carrying engineers cargo, have a bounty or running missions.

Thanks for the advice.
I think the reason I stopped playing is that I just don't understand the commerce system and I've only made like 2 million since I started (I was a founder). I found that grinding just sucked and I wasn't doing anything. I've decided to give it another go so any more advice is appreciated.

well, money earning opportunities are plenty now (and paying much better) - both mission rewards and bulktrading. for bulktrading, you want to watch out for the effects of economic states (boom, civil war) on goods like medicines or palladium ... bringing medicines to a war system, or trading between an industrial and an extraction system in boom generates serious profits - as long, as those states are active. you can filter the galaxy map for states, but double check whether it is the station (market) controlling faction is really in that state.

and missions - enjoy, especially when you are allied with a faction.
