Like most I've had jammed HDs. They always happen just before you definitely planned to backup all your data.

The accepted wisdom is never open these things up.

This chap has done just that and shown that it is possible to get that HD working again, even temporarily, and to recover that data.

Another thing to try before opening (which is a last resort) is to remove the controller board and clean the spring contacts and the board.
That's after you put it in a freezer bag and freeze it...
