Engineers Getting desired weapon effects?

Might be a silly question, because I feel the only viable answer is to "grind it out", but I wanted to know how do people get specific weapon effects on their weapons.

Is it just a matter of a good roll or using up the unlocked levels (aka "favor")? Or is there a trick to it? Or perhaps some weapons engineers are easier to get favors than others?

PS. Do higher grade mods have a higher chance of a weapons effect in and of itself? I haven't yet had enough mats to test that out, I've only just managed to unlock G5 of the Dweller, and the thought of using up those levels is really depressing... :(

I bow to the inevitable and spend 2 grades to 'buy' the effect.

The trick to get back to G5 from G3 is finding a relatively easy G3 mod that you can use to spam your way back to G5. I find that there is usually 1 G3 mod that I have the materials for several rolls

Agreed. Or if you only have mats for level 1 rolls, just spam that. A bit of a click-fest, but chances are you'll have lots of mats for doing them.

After you have obtained a weapons upgrade you are happy with except you missed hitting the special effect jackpot... Before you click on APPLY.... Click on the ADJUST button above that wheel section and open up the list of special effects you are able to buy using your existing Rep with that Engineer. The amount your rep will drop is indicated on that same menu. Usually 2 grades per selected special effects upgrade. As far as I know ALL of the special effects that Engineer can provide through a lucky spin of that wheel thingy can be bought using Rep in this Adjust menu.

After you apply the one you want, and save the entire upgrade you will likely need to rebuild your rep with that Engineer in order to get back to the same level you started out at. Keep in mind, these special effects "purchases" MUST be applied to the unsaved upgrade before you finalize the process and save the upgrade to your weapon. You can't add this effect to a saved upgrade later unfortunately.

Lightweight mods. Buy CMM composites in bulk, the rest is either common minerals (you DID stock on them, right?) and materials you get from killing traders.
