Ok this isns't a major gripe because I must be missing something. But I wanted to progress with the Federation. I wanted to go into the Naval Forces but with the progression the first mission was to buy Illegal weapons so I thought hell no especially the fact that the station Ackerman Station (where I had to deliver to) those products were illegal and I would get shot out the sky. So I though ok can't do combat that way so let's go and do some pirate hunting. Accepted one that said hunt 4 pirates in Chamunda. So I go to Chamunda and find an unidentified signal source where I jump into. Got an updated mission log and a message from a ship saying that if I hunt 6 federation ships the bounty would be higher. So I though ha pirate and after a brief combat shot him down. Now I find he was actually innocent and I have a 6k bounty on my head. I might go Alliance lol what am I doing wrong money isn't an issue I got my cobra and a spare 300k credits but I just want to get good at combat without getting a wanted status.

I guess they are random people that the true pirates find in a bar somewhere and buy them a drink or two before they talk them into acting like a pirate and meeting some stranger in a dark alley to give them a message like they did to you.
Theory, they aren't pirates, but ambassadors from pirate stations, especially if you are in an Anarchy system.
I've made this mistake too, best thing to do is go pay the bounty off, and continue with the mission. If you abandon the mission, or fail it, it will affect your reputation and really slow down your progress.
And do the illegal mission, it doesnt take a genius to get past the security, and if you dont get past the security you will only incur an 800cr fine (happened to me).
Once you complete that mission, you will unlock the Black Ops missions, which are kinda hard if you dont have the correct setup.
I got to Chief Petty Officer rank in 3/4 missions. Super easy stuff.
