Newcomer / Intro Getting jumped while mining

I went over to the Epsilon Herculis system to do some mining for Praseodymium. Before I got my mining laser out I get gang jumped by 5 NPS ....blew up rather quickly. That is just wrong,,,,,,[h=3][/h]

Hi!
Yes, whenever you enter the ring, a couple of pirates will follow your wake. Either relocate immediately or try to play for time until the cops arrive (in high security it takes about 20 seconds)

I would easily taken one or two...but there was no time against 5 of them.....I did not have time to pick an escape route to jump to.....very odd

After you drop out of supercruise, immediately boost about 10 or 20 times to get clear of that spot, which is where the pirates will drop-out too. By the time they drop, you'll be long gone and they'll be wondering where you are. You won't get any trouble after that.

If you can live with out the bonus that being in a rez site gives you just drop in anywhere, but as above hit AB burn away from your initial drop in, its not 100% you might still get the odd npc dropping in after you, I once had one chasing me for about 4 drops not fun in a T7..

Yes, five is very odd. :D
(sorry)

I usually get either a big one (Python or FdL) or a wing of two or three fighters tops.
I think you were just unlucky or it's a very low security system...

Quite unusual. Pledged to PowerPlay?
If the Cargo Hold carries nothing but limpets, you can cruise in an unshielded Ship back & forth right through a HazRES or Compromised NAV Beacon - without ever getting attacked.

Other than that, only a Mission might spawn you this - and these NPCs commonly attack no matter what.

If you've no cargo (only limpets) .. are not in powerplay and not on a mission .. just wait, do not open fire. Pirates will scan you and leave, as you've no cargo to interest them. Open fire though .. and you've had it (sometimes the guy's even on his own and as soon as you open fire his pals arrive. Eeek)

When it comes to mining missions (and I tend to mine in lawless space outside the bubble) my advice is to go mining first and when you return (to a high-tech station or systems in boom or expansion, as these give mining missions) the missions can be treated as a bonus to your regular pay day, which I do in commodities market. It's tempting I know, you might have 5 tons of Osmium and a mission (for 10) might lead you to carry those 5 tons back out to get more. Asking for trouble though, imo you're pirate's fodder. Make sure 'report crimes against me' is on and you can relocate to a different place in the ring but it's definitely not a peaceful life carrying valuable cargo!

Good luck Cmdr o7

Nah, they are still going for the limpets, too. Not always, but I definitely wouldn't count on them just leaving.

You don't have to drop into the actual RES spot to mine. Drop into the ring anywhere and you can still mine. You may see an NPC drop just after you, but it is very rare.

If just out mining on your own, there's little risk provided you wait for pirates to show, scan you and leave.

If on a mission, there's more risk. Keep an eye on comms - there's often an update informing you there are hostiles after you. Then you will be intercepted, persistently, and often in your home system when lining up for the run-in

Carrying cargo invites immediate attack (check you haven't acquired some engineering commodities from a previous mission)

No, in my experience NPC drop after you EVERY TIME. Sometime cops, sometimes other miners, most of the time pirates. But every time it's someone.
And I don't think OP was mining in RES. He wouldn't be so surprised by the attack force, there.

I see, I have not done any mining here since the beginning of my game, things must have changed.

Yea, mining, trading, exploration... basically any activity will get you killed, now. Sooner or later.
Bounty hunting is the safest job, ironically, because at least you have a ship prepared for heavy combat. :D

I was not on a mission I did have cargo, limpets and a few Micro cooling hoses. I was going to mining for some Praseodymium. I am working on engineering my weapons.

What are your assets? Do you have access to a ship that can launch a fighter? I like to have a SLF around while mining. My Master ranked pilot can easily dispose of three Vipers on her own without me having to intervene. It's quite a relief.

Were you in a RES? Outside? (just interesting)

I would suggest mining in a medium / high security system with metallic ring ideally, report crimes deinitely toggles 'on'. High Metal may also be OK for Praseodymium (more common ring type, you can also go to metallic/high metal asteroid belts if all you need is a few tons). It's local to me but Salikians, medium security, has metallic ring.

Now whether you're better off inside the RES or outside I'm not sure. in RES .. security ships around but I suspect pirates will come in waves. Outside a RES you're 'most likely' on your own, and may need to bunny hop a little bit, but pirates will arrive a minute or two after you do, and you can assess the situation. Depending on what ship you're in and how well defended, you might blow them up or have to run two or three times (just SC a few Mm away and drop in the same ring). You don't always always see a pirate so you should get lucky (or get to kill an Adder) after a couple of attempts.

If it's all too much (and presumably you need more cooling hoses now?) PM me .. although I'm near Salikians (and you can look up distances in map) I generally have Praseodymium on me (one cannister of hydrogen fuel, per ton Praseodymium sound fair?)

ps. have never once been attacked for my cargo of limpets (zero population, lawless system, no RES).

I have been to a few metal rich rings. Never had this many ships after me at once. I did think about having a fighter carrying ship with me, I have 2.9 bl in my account, yes...I could afford it....lol. There is one thing I have not done and I will start is going to Asteroid belts. And...I have not been using Prospecting Limpets....I will start. Thank you Winterwalker for the offer....very kind of you. Let me give this a go and see what happens.

It's the engineer cargo. Pirates go stupid psycho over these. Never take them mining unless you want to have a fight. The pirate spawn everywhere is silly, but that's ED.
