Getting lost in navigation

o7

Greeting all,
2 days ago i bought this fantastic game for the PS4. I looked up the info and choose the Empire to work for. The thing is, I have no idea how to get there...
I try using the galaxy map to plot a route but only seem to get only a few systems far before ending up in a dead end...
I can't figure out how to find a route and have been pulling hairs over the past few days, looking up tips everywhere and trying to find a way.

Either I'm dumd as they come or just to noob a dude..

Can anyone walk me trough it step by step?

Regards,
Overload

The starting Sidewinder has a very small FSD. You simply don't have the range yet. So earn some money where you are and upgrade your FSD when you can afford it.

To be more precise, the FSD stands for frame shift drive. You can find it in outfitting and core modules. The empire tends to be at the bottom of the bubble with respect to the galactic plane. As said above, earn some money with simple missions (data delivery for example) and upgrade your FSD. On your way there, make sure you don't run out of fuel. I suggest also buying a fuel scoop for the trip. Good luck.

unless you fit a fuel scoop you cannot fly there without refueling by landing at a station. also not all stars can be scooped - only OBAFGKM class stars are scoopables. you will probably (if using fuel scoop) need to set the filters in the galaxy map to not show stars that are not those classes and apply to route.

what i am guessing is, you are plotting a route to the nearest imperial controlled system and its turning into a dotted line after a jump or two. that just means you will run out of fuel and must refuel before continuing. so long as you travel through systems with population, then its just a matter of using the left panel to select a station when your fuel is low (2 jumps left and you should refuel) go land and refuel, and then in left panel scroll down to next system in your route and lock it. then you launch, jump and can repeat this until you get there. it might be idea to do some missions on the way or something if you can, to compensate for fuel costs if not scooping.

First, thanks for all the tips :)

I succeeded in getting a fuel scoop to work and understood the meaning of the dotted line.

The thing is, when figuring out a route on my own i always ended up in a system without being able to progress, only having the option to return from where I came.

Is this only because my FSD just isn't good enough?

At the moment im planning to make money for upgrading the ship and increase the range. I hope that will suffice.

And the simplest way of remembering those star classes is "Oh Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me".

:)
Or KGB FOAM (whatever that is) :p

OP-

If you dock at your nearest station, you will be able to enter the Outfitting section (unless you happen to dock at a station without it!), once there, check to see how much a new, better Frame Shift Drive is.

If you've not done any Outfitting before, you'll likely have a 2E FSD.
'2' is the size or class of the module, in general bigger is better. But your sidewinder can only fit up to a class 2 anyway.
The 'E' is the rating, this runs E-A.
A is generally the best, but most expensive. This is what you'll be looking for as it will give you the most range. Looking at https://coriolis.edcd.io/ (a very handy site for virtually building a ship!), going from a 2E to a 2A FSD will more than double your range. :)
A 2A FSD costs around 160,000 credits.

Then you're free to travel almost anywhere, except for an area where the stars thin out, like the outer rim. :)

But you will need a fuel scoop for long distance travel.

Fly safe CMDR!

This is exactly what I did when I started. Jumped in, read up on the power factions and chose to support Lavigny. You can make it from your starting location to an empire world. I ran into a lot of brown dwarves back then.

I had the experience of playing the original Elite game going for me, so I knew a few things about how elite was expected to work.

You will want a fuel scoop. You will want to be sure to visit OBAFGKM systems.

What I did was look on the galaxy map for lavigny areas of the bubble and grabbed the one closest to where I started. It will be easier for you if you collect a bit of money and either upgrade the ship (to say a hauler or adder) and/or the frame shift (friendship) drive.

That's pretty much what I did when I started the game. (goal was Imperial Courier, which I still fly)

The advice I found was to upgrade your ship to get about 12ly per jump. That should be enough to jump some of the "gaps". I did the trip over a week in an Eagle, stopping to get gas at a station every couple jumps. I had a class 1 fuel scoop for emergencies at the time.

Enjoy space while it's still "big" :)

I would also advise getting the credits to buy the Adder before you set off to empire space.

The Adder has 4 times more fuel than the Sidewinder. It will make the journey much more pleasant.

You can also buy additional fuel tanks for your ships. I really can't stand having the dash dots for a fuel gauge.

I found a good build for a sidewinder which got me there in 22 jumps. took little over an hour (got my youngest waking up in between, she's 6 months old).
Anyhow, now doing a recon of the closests systems to find a good place to make a living as a combat Commander. Also not easy but I'm getting there.

Also, a working Galaxy Map helps. :)

You can use it to filter your trip for scoopable stars. Look under the Star Type view selection, and check the box "Apply to route". It will show you how far you can go (usually), if you have the taget system's name. OBAFGKM are the stars you want.

An even better method is to scrape up enough cash for an Adder. You *will* thank me. :)
