Getting online in the game?

When im in the game menu I can't find the multiplayer tab how in the hell do i know if im playing singleplayer or multiplayer? This is ing me off please help

Its always multiplayer unless you go Solo mode.
just click start then one of these three
Solo mode is JUST you
private group is Just you and a few friends.
Open is all multiplayer

Click Start.
Click Open for Multiplayer, click Solo for Singleplayer.

Incidentally, if you see hollow contacts (instead of solid yellow/gold ones) on your sensors, those are players.

Also, if you go Open it'll take one hyperspace jump to join properly.
