Getting reacquainted with the DK2 - it literally changes your perspective

I've had a spotty experience with the DK2. When I received mine many, many months ago, I loved it for the first 2 days. Then all the known flaws - the screen door effect, the visible pixels and relatively poor resolution that is much worse than a regular 1080p monitor - quickly grew tiresome. So I stopped using it after those 2 short days, and reverted to my big screen TV, and added a TrackIR. I tried the DK2 once in a blue moon, but issues like judder/stutter made me quickly switch back to the TV.

Fast forward to today. I decided to download the latest non-beta drivers, and the judder was gone. In fact, the game stutters less with the DK2 @ 75hz than my regular TV @ 60hz, which I can't explain. It's now very smooth. Of course, it still looks nowhere near as good as a regular monitor, but I'm now willing to forgive it's subpar graphics over the improved immersion and perspective.

I bought a FDL a week or so ago, and quite like it. But with a regular screen, the FDL (and every other ship) "feel" about the same size from inside the same cockpit. Stations seem small, as do other ships when they fly past - except if you're right on top of them. The DK2 changes that perspective completely. For reasons I can't explain, my seating position in the FDL feels different/higher than with a regular monitor (with default FOV). Visibility, which is pretty terrible on a regular screen, is great - all of a sudden. It makes me want to try the Clipper all over again, which I have not experienced in the DK2.

Anyway, suffice to say, it's pretty awesome. While I'm disappointed that the resolution of CV1 will be only marginally better than DK2, I'm hoping that issues like the screen door effect and visible pixels, will be reduced - at least a bit. The game is just so much more fun - everything so much bigger and more interesting - with a DK2. (That being said, a trader/explorer who wants to refer to his/her notes, the internet, 3rd party tools etc. will likely find it frustrating as taking the headset on/off is a bit of a pain; wish they'd implement a visor/flip-up feature of some sort....)

That is all.

The Clipper is beautiful in the Rift, as is the Eagle, Viper, ASP, t6 and every other ship Ive flown.

The t7 is the biggest surprise, it's like you're sitting in a steampunk cathedral...beautiful.

From what I understand these issues will be significantly reduced, although not completely eliminated; I must say that I'm very much looking forward to playing with a VR headset, regardless of any minor technical limitations.

Sounds great! Issues aside, at least :) I would love to try one one day and do hope I get the chance to!

Changes your perspective! Ha! I see what you did there!

If I had the funds, I'd absolutely love to build a new PC that would be capable of running this game on the Oculus Rift. But I'd wait until they cram more pixels into the Oculus. Then again, forgive me as I'm not up to date on the tech specs and resolution capabilities.

T9 surely?

Anyway I don't have a Rift but I can't wait for one of the VR contenders to release a retail unit as I'll be right in there. Can't wait to see what Elite is like in VR. The only ship cockpits that have felt big to me so far on my 1080p monitor using my Track IR are the T9 and the Anaconda, but I've read that they feel much bigger in VR. The one thing I really want to experience in VR is flying down close to a planet. Just normally doing that the sense of scale is pretty awesome but in VR it must be absolutely breath taking.

tell me, what drivers did you install? was it SDK 0.6? is that now working with ED?

Thanks for sharing.

Holding out for the retail version (and a flip-up switch!). :)

Can't say I disagree with the OP at all. Playing the game with a monitor after playing with a Rift feels like suddenly trying to fly your ship while looking through a letter box-shaped hole in a door, and as for any immersion there's no comparison. The only thing that could make it better is a motion simulation system, like the FeelThree (don't work for them, but I'll be backing them when they get onto Kickstarter). I can only imagine how much fun flying around the galaxy would be in a full sim, but until then the Rift on its own does a great job.

I borrowed a DK2 this weekend, installed the latest runtime drivers from OR, it is absolutely awesome, a different game, with a totally different perspective. Yes the resolution suffers, I changed the HUD colour which solved a lot of problems but it does not detract from the experience, get use to it fairly quickly. The main difference apart from awesome 3D is the massive scale of everything around you. No glitches at all, had a 4 hour session with no problems, cannot see me giving the DK2 back!

No T7, the glass extends about 20feet above you and is covered in creeper like cables on the struts, 10feet behind and 10 feet above you are two pulpits flanking a door big enough for 5or6 people abreast, and IIRC youve got another 10feet beneath you and another pilots chair there.
It's a little eerie tbh.

Editorial by some guy from Rock Paper Shotgun: "Why VR Is Going To Be An Enormous Flop". http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/201...-is-going-to-be-an-enormous-flop/#more-295987

3D TV anyone?

*cough* 3D / VR erotica anyone? *cough* ;)

I'll almost certainly buy one, but I do think the market could be limited by the awkwardness/isolation of having to wear the goggles. I have the "cheap imitation" option of head tracking, which obviously is nowhere near as good, but does vastly improve immersion, with higher resolution graphics and without the isolation of goggles.
