Getting ready for ED

Hi guys, Been looking forward to this for so long now, and as the Beta gets closer it gets harder for me to wait, I was so hooked on the original Elite spending all my spare time playing it. I know we are all in for a great ride when ED is ready, I come here everyday to read all what people are saying, this alone keeps me ticking over, what a great community we have here, all in all it's a very friendly place to be. If I could ask a couple of questions.

Does anyone know if I will still be able to upgrade to the Beta close to Christmas, as I may not have funds to do this until then, but I do need to be in the Beta, this is a must for me.

Do you think that my Xbox PC controller will be good enough for ED ?

Is it just me, or are there more people that are having a hard time waiting.

I personally don't know for sure, but so far it seems that upgrading to beta should be possible during Christmas time, as alpha still will be in full swing. Michael has said that there will be plenty of warning before closing down pledging possibility trough PayPal, so just follow the news, his Twitter account, etc. to catch those signs

I'm finally allowing myself to get a bit excited as December draws nearer.

I'm on the forums pretty much everyday but up till recently it's just been something that's happening at some point in the future - but the excitement went up a notch again the other day with the specs thread.

And December starts not this weekend but the next!

Thanks for the info, but I not sure what you mean here, If I sign up for Beta I thought I would receive the following though the mail : DRM-free collector's premium boxed edition of "Elite: Dangerous". Includes a T shirt with "I backed Elite: Dangerous" on the back, an A3 Star Map and a paperback copy of the official sequel to "The Dark Wheel".

Rig cost me AUD 3000
Also to date - I have donated about AUD 800

I cannot believe how expensive this game is

Yeah, you will get those. It was about individual physical items.

Great isn't it? I got a shiny new machine a couple of months and the novelty still hasn't worn off.

As I look at it I'm spending money now that I would have spent previously if I'd not dropped out of PC gaming for so long.

So in fact I've actually saved money because I would probably have spent even more had I not taken a break!

It's a good investment, you will play ED hours and hours

You do realize Decmeber has 31 days right? Hehe that could mean a 30 day wait when December hits!!

Inconceivable! They couldn't be that cruel.

Here's my theory;

It won't be a Monday - no-one likes doing big stuff on a Monday.

It won't be a Friday because if the brown stuff hits the fan they'll want to deal with it on a weekday.

That means it has to be by the 19th latest (not a Friday). That only leaves Tues and Wed that week - so it will be before that week.

My money is on the 3rd/4th or 10th/11th.

I believe you can upgrade your pledge via the backer app at any time.

We did see DB and Igor using a console controller in one of the dev diaries - so probably.. perhaps someone else can offer a more concrete idea.

I haven't got a clue what type of controller I will be using.. using a controller allows for a more relaxed kinda positioning - using a keyboard and mouse is a bit more straining for playing games.

I think the Xbox PC Game Controlller may do better then a actual games joystick like the ones they have out today. I've just started using my Saitek Cyborg Fly 5 PC Flightstick it's more difficult than I thought it would be while playing Oolite.

Well there's a flip side to that coin: I played OOLITE with my XBOX controller and the controlls had difficulties keeping the ship from moving around while I wasn't touching the little sticks. I went to Saitek X52Pro and flying was like a breeze. I had three axis in my right hand and throttle in my left. Allowed me do some weird stuff while docking into the station without any problems 99% of the time.

All your upgrades are here, and there's no sign of removal of upgrades yet.

In fact, I upgraded to the Premium Boxed Edition only yesterday! Just waiting for my PB forum access now...

Hey Guys, Thanks for all the replies, I'll keep my fingers x that I can still join the Beta right near Christmas, it looks promising by what you say above.

As for the controller I think I'll try my Xbox PC controller first, I have a Saitek Cyborg Pro Gold which is very old now, only used it for FSX, can't say I like it that much, pulled it out of the shed the other day to give it a try, it seems to have seized up, I think it needs a shot of WD40

I changed my internet offer and I took the VDSL. It takes about 10 days to switch between ADSL to VDSL. This is a first step. In the spring, I'm building a new PC. I would be ready for the Gamma phase. For the two betas, I'll just watch the ED environment on my current computer
