Getting somewhat frustating with trade

I have been playing since premium beta, granted I havent played really much when ED went gold but I have played some and I really dont get the trade system, I dosent work in my book, I have visited over 200 systems doing trades but the amount it takes to even earn anything is stagering, sure I earn here and there never going at loss but the time to take the goods from station to station is at this time not worth it, yes I know some of you lucky commanders have found a gold mine but me, no not even close.

I do have found some trade lanes that have stock high and sell high at another system station but they are usually 5-8 jumps and no return trade that makes any profit that justify the time to fly back not really worthwhile.
So I have desided at this time not to play ED at all, I had done my pirate and bounty hunting during beta so I'm quite bored with that.

And no exploring at this time is out of the question, I want to wait til they makes it more worthwhile.

Instead of focussing in one thing at a time you can mix it up a little, firstly check the bulletin board for light cargo missions. If you have more than one going to the same system and better yet, same station take as many as you can. This will slowly build rep when you complete them and they will eventually start to give you more lucrative missions. If you have space in the hold, check the commodities market and at the top where it says Galactic Average you can drop this down to the destination systems name and it will fill the column with the words "exported to" or "imported from", obviously you don't want to sale back an item to where it was shipped from. Ideally you want to find the system with high supply and sale the goods to a system with high demand, but as long you sale the goods from the export to the system which imports you should still turns a profit.

If you're in a small ship with a small cargo hold your return won't be high (a thousand profit item on an 8 ton cargo vessel nets you 8k in return, whilst a ship with 36 ton cargo will net you 36k), but by accepting missions you'll eventually be able to buy and/or upgrade your ship for higher returns.

If you're travelling always at least scan the star, after 20+ light years from the scanned item you'll net about 604 credits...

My most profitable route so far has been between Ho Hsi (the system which is currently in civil war) and one of the surrounding systems (starts with a C, I cant remember the name). I think the distance is about 5 Ly between the two systems.
I've pretty much been transporting silver one way with a profit of ~800 Cr per unit and getting a bit of cash the other way transporting explosives with 44 cr per unit. Before I bought my Type-6 freighter I was using my Cobra with maxed out cargo (60 units) and each run would net me about 45-50k Cr. I timed myself and a trip from Ho Hsi and back took about 8 or 9 minutes, so that's almost ~300K per hour (off the top of my head). After I get my new type-6 fitted with max cargo I'll be making almost 80 or 90k per run.

I'm not particularly experienced with trade route finding, but this little route has been netting a nice sum of cash compared to exploring and bounty hunting. I plan on getting as much money as I can before the demand evens out, and with the civil war that might be awhile.

1000 Cr per ton runs are not that hard to find. Just use the available tools both ingame and out.
making about 250k there and 250k back at the moment on a 3 system jump plus the odd bb mission to boost the profits.
Thats a type-7 with no shields btw.
