Getting that Direct3d "lock a buffer" error

Already sent a support ticket in, but seeing if anyone is getting the same error. All was fine before the nvidia update this morning, not overclocking except XMP profile on RAM. Game runs fine until I alt tab, running multi monitors.. did the unplug 2nd monitor and change to borderless trick.

Today 24 March 2020 I updated to latest release NVIDIA Driver Version 445.75
Went to run Elite Dangerous via Steam Launcher and got ... Critical Error, Black Screen. ESC key to Exit. Did a driver re-install ... but same result.

Did a Google search and found this post on the NVIDIA Forum >>
After reading that, I opened the NVIDIA Control Panel, went Manage 3D Settings, opened Image Sharpening and turned that OFF.
Restart PC, then run Elite Dangerous and ... YES ... Now it loaded like usual.

However, it does appear this NVIDIA Driver v445.75 is a bugged release. There are reports that other games crash, regardless whether Image Sharpening is OFF or ON. I think we can expect another NVIDIA driver update very shortly to resolve this issue.

Ah, nice, I just rolled back the nvidia driver back to the previous driver, played for hours. i'm almost thinking they rushed this driver for Alyx

I remember nvidia releasing a driver albeit briefly that actually disabled cooling fans leaving gpus to smoulder at max demand
they quicky released another driver in the 500 series days...…………
I do wonder just how many cards went capacitors wrong side up due to this and users obliviously throwing them away due to the burn outs the faulty release caused...…….
luckily I noticed straight away as my pc was just too quite

Thanks for mentioning this. I always wait at least a few days after a driver release to see if anyone complains :) You've saved me from installing it.

+1 to problem and solution.
I had to turn off Nvidia sharpening to launch ED successfully on latest driver.

Rolling back to 442.59 (previous version, from 02.03.2020) seems to have fixed this problem.

I can run ED with sharpening again.

The NVIDIA GeForce Game Ready Driver v445.87 released 15 April 2020 runs Elite Dangerous PC version just fine. No critical error. No blackscreen. Image Sharpening ON or OFF.
Safe to update to this latest GPU driver version.
