Community Event / Creation Getting the ball rolling again with Buckyball Run 9

THE DATES ARE SET! BBR9 will kick off at 2100 GMT, 2 Jan 3301.

Howdy racers. Don't know if you've been keeping up on current events but it looks like somebody's gonna be building a station way out in the middle of nowhere.

You ask me, this has Buckyball written all over it. So I'm thinking of putting together an O-fficial Buckyball Run for the community goal and wanted to run it by the good folks of the BRC to make sure I wasn't gonna step on anybody's toes, Alec Turner in particular... I see your Bump N' Grind will still be in progress during the proposed dates (22 October, give or take) and definitely don't wanna throw off your groove. I would of course be happy to pump the Bump N' Grind as well as the BRC to the best of my ability to plug shamelessly. (And let's face it, I give up whatever shame I have whenever I record my time on the board.)

EDIT: Well because I'm 'Murican and we do things the right way when it comes to dates MM-DD-YY as opposed to the "logical" way of DD-MM-YY I thought Alec's Bump 'N' Grind was running until 10 November instead of 11 October. And sure, Metric is way more logical too, but you'll never get me to sprinkle U's in words that don't need them or drive on the wrong side of the road. But I digress...

Is there a BRC event coming up around 22 October?

Since this is likely to be a cargo hauling trip I'll have to adjust the Big Board to accommodate but that should take only a few swings of the ol' sledgehammer. Seeing as how it'll be a high traffic affair, the clock will stop upon entry of the target system as was the case in the A* to keep from adding to the nebula via collisions in the slot. Plus, it wouldn't be nice to dent up a spankin' new station before opening day. It'd be bad for the brand.

After that, it's just a matter of getting a start and finish location and whipping up a bumper sticker. Everybody loves bumper stickers. Here's the preliminary version:

Any objections? Complaints? If so, you know who to send 'em to...

Wow FIRST POST!!! and 10 hours after the initial post too...

It's so strange that of all days, I decided to pick today to pop in to FD forums to have a look-see, and I see an O-fficial BBR~!

OK that's like Sixth Sense kind of creepy. ;)

But it's not O-fficial just yet. I wanna see if Alec has any objections as well as checking in with the folks who are actually working on the CG. Worse comes to worst, we push it back a week or two until the dust settles. Plus it still seems that 1.4 is a little wet around the edges...

But damn if that doesn't seem like a fun CG! And I do love nebulae so...

Welcome back EZ & Bucky!

The Bump'n'Grind Outpost Dash porta-loos are due to be collected first thing on Monday morning so the race has to end at midnight, this coming Sunday (11th October).

Would be an honour to have your name somewhere on the big board by the way (hint hint).

So, no toes are being stepped on whatsoever (unless you count Inga Stevenson's recent run-in with Charlie deWitt) and my groove is still well and truly on.

An official Buckyball Run in the offing eh? Sorry FD, your Horizons malarkey is gonna have to wait.
:D

I keep clicking the Rep button but nothing is happening!!

With that said... Do I get a bag over my head and shoved in a corner if I ask why we're skipping number 8? :p

just as a side note... a buckyball race to a cgs station... that means, BRC would need to compensate others cmdrs being destroyed if a racer shoots in. sounds like a joke, but i really think one should do that (i would happily put 10 mio for compensations into a bank if such a race happens!).

Way ahead of ya...

We don't want to hit anybody. It just slows you down... :p

well, i should have expected you being ahead of me! races and all... :D

You've obviously never seen me race. :D

Thanks, Alec! I definitely need to do something to refresh my skills. But I don't know if I'll have time since it ends Sunday instead of next month. We'll see how it works out. Love your new, improved Big Board, BTW... Very sharp!

I'll be there. :)

Unless they decide to build the Nebula station in the HYPIO PRAO AA-A H16 nebula or something (then I'll only probably be there). :)

Welcome back!
This is probably a silly question, especially since we don't have details of FD's plans, but is the race is to the station that is eventually placed in the nebula or to the CG destination? I would expect that a CG to gather materials to construct an Ocellus to fly out there would be a trade CG within the bubble. If that trade CG starts ~Oct 22nd, then it will probably last for a week (maybe less if there's plenty of support!) but it could still be some time after completion before the station is built and flown to its destination - it might not even be in place until 1.5. I really like the idea of this race (and I would help out on the CG to build the station as well) but I think it might be best to be flexible about dates until more information on the CG is forthcoming. I would not even rule out the possibility of having more than one station in a nebula, either - the Pleiades might be the favourite but a lot of people would like to see one in Barnard's Loop.

Well, given that the race will end at a system rather than a station, I guess it doesn't matter if there's no station there yet :D

I must admit the Pleiades being the favourite makes me a bit sad - it's not exactly far away from inhabited space (I mean, is Maia* further out than Sothis even?), I was hoping the new station would be a bit more remote.

* Edited: Merope was part of the Sirius hunt, Maia's the one in Pleiades... This infernal cold needs to go away, I can't think straight :p

merope is closer to sol than sothis, whether it's closer to inhabited space depends where you draw the boarders of inhabeted space :)

i think in terms of distances - once you have gone 10 k ly out (26... 65 ...), distances become very relative... i would love to see a station in the veil nebula, it's just a 1 1/2 hour trip, those 1400 ly --- but whe you see the number of unexplored systems there, you get an idea how many cmdr's would call this "far away far away".

Yeah, definitely... Would far prefer having it be ~1kLy out.
Not sure whether you actually meant Maia, as I meant to say :p I just edited my post to correct it. Either way - "that big star in the middle of the Pleiades" :D

I had Merope on the brain since that was a potential lead in the Sirius treasure hunt during the 1.4 beta.

Is there a BRC event coming up around 22 October?

We have a pretty full schedule of events, but of course we're very happy to make room in the schedule for a full Buckyball Run :). Key next thing on the schedule is the Kessel Run, which should be starting no later than 31st October. There might be a warm up race beforehand, but that could happily be postponed for BBR9.

Good to see you back :).

If it's not immovable (in other words, "if Kligg is available"), we could shift the Mischief Mile to be what is currently the "TBC" Warm-up Race 4? That'd leave a slot late October... (The Kessel Run is currently down as "early November" on the site, after all :p)

The Mischief Mile is actually Rusticolus' race - and yes, that's exactly what I'm thinking :).
