General Give mining an objective other than making money

I've played this game since beta and on both PC and console. I find myself sporadically coming back every few years and I'm really enjoying deep core mining at the moment.

However it feels (like most aspects of this game) its purely geared toward financial gain.

Having such a complex mining system for high value minerals is great but I wish there was another reason for me to mine other than to sell the ore.

Why not let me mine materials to build a ship for less than the purchase value?

So you prefer to mine to save money instead of mining to spend money? sorry, doesn't make sense to me. Or at least I can't tell the difference.

I invite you to ask all mining companies IRL if they ever mined for something else than for money.

I kind of agree, and it would be an easy fix for me, just buff the mats you find in roids and the quality of them.

I work for one :) we mine a raw material and manufacture it into a product that goes into construction of buildings. It's common practice for mining in most EDC's. Our competitors purchase raw material from abroad and manufacture using that. By manufacturing your raw material from source you are able to attain higher margins and have ultimate control of quality

Not sure if you knew this but mining profit is historically low atm. You should have come back to min a month or 2 ago.

I did. I actually started just after the Jan update. Was getting 1.2mill for low temp diamonds until they nerfed the market again on Monday this week. 950,000 is the new price I'm able to attain which isnt the most cost effective money making in elite but I love it when the rock blows up...

Mining for higher margins ain't working for money?

Unless FD implements some way to build your own manufacturing plants, I don't see how we can have anything similar ingame. Unless you want to barter your ore directly for ships and modules. But I don't see how: you don't bring raw material to your car dealer either, do you? This would be overcomplicating a simple trade.

I think what I'm alluding to here would mean a complete overhaul of the economy of the game.

If I could take a worthless raw material and manufacture it into a valuable ship part and then combine those ship parts to build a ship would be pretty cool. It would also mean allowing the market to fluctuate naturally as the player base buy and sell rather than the one way npc driven market.

If only we could mine materials and use it to build planetary bases on planets we discovered first. First discovering a planet suddenly would have actually a purpose (imagine ownership on a planet you discovered), we could populate unpopulated systems (which is in Fdev hands right now) and the base building could work like a Community Goal for Squadrons, where you would have to deliver materials for the building process.

oh the dreams...

There are some byproducts of Mining though, since a long time now :

  • BGS (Factions) offers Mining Missions
  • Mining also produces Elements, which can be used for Synthesis or Engineering
  • occasionally CGs had Mining Goals (now called "Interstellar Initiatives")
  • in Deep Space, Mining has saved some CMDRs out of tight spots (Repair/AFMU refill or a mandatory FSD Boost to get out of a corner the Ship was unable to leave again otherwise)

Unfortunately, we never had a true Sandbox Economy with actual Supply and Demand, Production based off available Resources etc.
That would have made things a tad more interesting.
The most recent Mining Economy adjustment tried (tries?) to make Economies react more properly to Mining Supply and especially oversupply by CMDRs for what it's worth.

On top, we're still waiting for things like Carriers and at a later time (rumored) Personal Bases.
I assume Mining of some form or sort will play a role with maintaining (Carrier Maintenance) /constructing (Personal Bases) these.
