Giving rides in your spaceship?

I’m in the process of setting up a second computer with an Oculus Rift. Not for space or flight simulators, but other games. No joystick or flight type controllers.

This second system presents an opportunity to let non-techie, non-gamer people ride along with me in my VR spaceship. Get an easy introduction into virtual reality along with a taste of space travel.

The question is what exactly do I need to just sit people down in a chair and fly them around with me for a bit sight seeing?

First off, it appears the full Elite Dangerous along with the Horizons - Season Pass is required to enable multi-crew.

Next questions is controllers. What’s the minimum requirement and how should I set them up? Are the Oculus Touch controllers good enough? I’ve never tried the Touch Controllers with Elite so haven’t a clue. What functions do my passenger actually need to perform to enjoy a flight into space, yet not cause any unnecessary problems for the pilot. The simplest plan would be to initiate the multi-crew session first, then put the Oculus on them with a stern “don’t touch anything.”

Does anyone has any experience with this? I’d appreciate any information or insights.

Thanks

Yup, keyboard should do nicely.

Oh and I can recommend the Fer-de-lance as a touring ship.

It's nice posh looking cockpit, got a vast overhead canopy and if you want the manoeuvrability to make any newcomer to VR loose their lunch...

Haven't actually done this myself but that's the first ship I would fly them off in.

Python or krait too

That older topic was very helpful, thanks.

The demos that come with the Oculus are fine for a general “this is VR.” What I’m planning is just a quick flight for some of my non techie friends who wonder why I spend so much time pretending to be a spaceman. As a minimum just exit the station and fly around it to get a sense of scale then dock. I’m not interested in giving anyone motion sickness. If they’re up it it I can always do more if they want. Fly through a scenic ring or land on a planet.

My ship choices would be Cobra Mk.III, Krait and Python. Multi-seat that I own.

Put this on the forum May of 2017, have done it several times since and works very well. It's not an instruction or how to do it piece, (although I will gladly write out exactly how I do it) more the results.
The video was taken on the second PC played and recorded on a screen. Flew in an Anaconda but probably an Asp Explorer or Krait would be best for the views.

I have 2 VR units but found using a screen while the other person is in VR is better to control the experience. But can be done either way, whatever floats your boat :)

Taking someone else into space using one VR set and 2 computers.

Couldn't have even dreamed of doing this a few years ago... Yesterday I put it together and it works like magic (it IS magic).

Elite Dangerous Horizons, Anaconda with multicrew, 2 computers, 2 commander accounts, create a private group online, 1 Oculus VR and a 7 year old grandson (wearing the VR set).
