Glimpse of the future?

I was trying really hard to remember what ED kinda reminded me of and after surfing through interesting threads on here on stumbled upon the video below, again.

Very similar to the ED engine from what I can tell albeit obviously different. Even so, the transitions to planets look amazing especially when I imagine this in the ED engine.

One can only hope. :D

I think this video and demo had a whole thread to itself a while back.

I remember seeing this in 2010 and getting really excited but then things went quiet.

Yes really nice transitions and it's beautiful to see.
I think E : D can take the surfaces to another level, though.

Indeed...that video has come up more times than can be counted. ;)

But at the same time it is precisely what David/FD wants do avoid. A planet with nice looking terrain and atmosphere is great, but then what? In terms of gameplay this is exactly what they want to avoid. I'm positive that when we eventually get to that point in ED they will have taken it to a completely different level.

The flaw in your statement is that most planets in the galaxy WOULD be literally that - terrain and little else, especially given the effort to adhere to realism. I wouldnt personally expect many planets to have diversity of terrain, let alone contain points of interest or colonised life etc.

So in that regard, im not sure what you are expecting by 'different level'...?

I hope the approach to planetary rings becomes better in ED. That video does it better. Too much obvious lodding going on currently in ED for my liking.

The planet in the example in the OP was meant to represent an outdoor world (earth like). THAT is what I expect to be on another level. Change the color texture of the example above and that could just as easily have been Mars.

But even "dead" worlds can probably be made more interesting. Cloudscapes, weather, dust storms, volcanoes, ice geysers and so on...the last two could even happen on planets/moons without atmosphere.

David explained recently that first will be landings on bare moons and planets without atmospheres. Then will come planets with atmospheres, because those will have weather. And last one will be outdoor planets.

Even bare moons and planets can have lot of interesting stuff lying around, minerals, beautiful vistas, gazers, etc. etc. etc. Amount of actual work to make planets come alive is mindblowing.

Beautiful terrain generation? It's been here for at least last 5 - 7 years now.

To be fair, Mr. Brebion and Mr. Newton both agree with you on that. Both the videos linked on this thread show the engine work-in-progress; neither shows a final product, nor are/were they intended to.

I played the combat demo of that, shame they actually never released the game I followed it for so many years.

I was meaning that the video I linked could be an example of what might be capable in the ED engine, albeit better I would assume.

it wasn't meant to be a one to one comparison, rather an example of what might come to pass in this game, again I'd expect it to be better though.

Also foliage, buildings, animals and the like hopefully someday. Seamless planet transitions on that scale would be phenomenal, provided the PG can handle it with the resources available.

They haven't given up, FYI, they're just taking a different path.

Keep a look-out for Infinity Battlescape. It's not the MMO, but it's how they plan to get to it.
