General / Off-Topic Global Appeal for Next Charity Livestream

Given that Frontier is a game developer and publisher with a global audience, the next charity live stream should have a more global appeal.

SpecialEffect is a UK based charity, so to make it more appealing for a global audience Frontier should include for example Child's Play Charity, because it's "a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in our network of over 100 hospitals worldwide."

Also Make-A-Wish International "The mission of Make-A-Wish International is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy." "Global reach: Impacting children in more than 50 countries through our 42 offices worldwide."

Anyway, the raised amount for SpecialEffect is amazing. Well done to everyone who contributed.

As a lone disabled parent of an autistic daughter living in the UK, the very people the charity is sorta aimed at...I would give begrudged nod and admit its a fair point, even though frontier are a UK company with many players also in the UK.

Not gonna rep ye fer complaining about a charity event though, regardless who the charity represented or why...its a low thing to moan about. Fair being a matter of perspective ^

Not too sure why it being UK based would dissuade people from giving or make it less appealing. Surely nationality shouldn't even come in to the equation.

I wouldn't even think about it if it a US based charity or a French based charity as the money is going to a good cause and helping people in need.

The nationality of the people should be irrelevant in my view.

In the Uk supporting local companies/charities etc is a big thing. Even the biggest supermarkets (what for America would be Costco/Walmart etc) often have sections with produce/meat or whatever locally sourced which is crazy when you think about how those behemoths of companies usually operate. Frontier helping a UK charity is something I can understand similarly if Blizzard was supporting a US charity.

Personally I think provided it helps gamers anywhere it's a good thing. The fact Frontier is a UK company and supporting a UK charity is hardly surprising given it simplifies a lot of things like exchange rates and a whole host of other things too. One thing that was said on stream was the Special Effect would love to go worldwide and often have requests from elsewhere. Whilst they can send equipment and stuff abroad the vastness of say Canada/America and the cost/time to reach there means lots more funds would go to time & travel not to the people they help.

My other first thought was - I don't know of a global worldwide gaming charity.

As we seem to be discussing it, I think it's a point that can be raised fair/unfair but given Frontier have now supported SE for 3 years I think it's a partnership thats been set-up to run a long time. As someone mentioned yesterday on the stream chat, how many other game developers can you name that run events like this for charities?

Given that Frontier now has access to the Chinese market, given the size of the market I propose that in future all charitable efforts should be restricted to the country where Frontier has the largest market. That way they will be promoting mores gamers who will then be able to but their games.

Makes sense! Also I propose that Cosmo, seeing as he is SO concerned about this issue, be put in charge of liason with selected Chinese gamer charities and be be sent out to China to oversee the efforts.

This and nobody was forced to donate at gunpoint either. I see this post and the others in a similar vein as yet another attempt by a few to have a go at Frontier for some kind of kicks.

OP suggests Frontier expand their charity event to include organisations with a worldwide reach as well; and you think he's having a go at Frontier for some kind of kick?
Wow. Really. Just.. wow.

Wow.. OP makes a suggestion to include an international charity to help MORE people.. and you lot get upset about it.
Well done guys.

Why shouldnt FD concentrate on helping people locally instead? Because if there's know how and tech, after that that can be scaled up.

While Child's Play is nominally global, reality is that it's grown from the US and most of its support go to places in North America (at time of writing, the portal page shows 118 hospitals in the US, 10 in Canada, and 16 "international"). That said, while I'd rather put money into a Euro-centric affair, I did sink the odd dollar into Desert Bus for Hope which should have some appeal to the truckers among us :)

Frontier should be congratulated on actually undertaking such an event and repeating it annually. By doing so they have provided a charity that does amazing work, the ability to expand what they do. Each year the amount collected goes up, who knows what the global reach of Special Effect will be in five, ten or fifteen years time. As a UK company with a single office in the UK, it makes sense to engage with a UK charity. All charities begin somewhere and if successful grow in size. Should we not applaud and support the sustaining of a partnership that now is three years in length and growing in stature.

If it has to be a worldwide charity then by definition it must be a large charity with global reach and significant funding already. Isn't it better to make a large difference to a small charity, than a small difference to a large charity.

Might I suggest that if what FDev is doing is causing anyone this much butthurt, that perhaps you start your own business, become successful, and organize a charity event of your own supporting a charity of your choice?

Or, failing that, just donate to a charity that doesn't make you lose sleep over what someone else is doing.

I never said they shouldn't.
I'm just mildly stunned at the vitriol Cosmo is receiving, and the accusations being leveled against him, over suggesting an international charity AS WELL AS* the local one.

*His post did say "...should include..." after all.

It is strange to suggest to people who spend their own time to do such massive auction to change charity. Either you don't like charity or imply people are doing it wrong.

By that logic, anybody who makes a suggestion to change ED either doesn't like ED, or is implying Frontier are doing it wrong.

Sometimes a suggestion is just a suggestion.

Well while we all whinge about who FD supports in their charity drive, I just matched my donation to SpecialEffect, to Child's Play. Because if you need FD's support to make a donation, you need to check the meaning of the word "charity".
