Global chat on the table? 1.x release?

One of the biggest, among many, mistakes (IMO) FD has made was the voice communication in ED, or the lack thereof in this case.

well, how good is your spanish, german, russian, finnish....?

although i can barely be understood here in the forums... you wouldn't want to voicechat with me ;)

Oh I would! If everyone in the galaxy spoke the same language as me I'd be really disappointed! Matter of fact, I'd look forward to meeting those who's language I don't speak, both for immersion and for a new experience! :D I wish the stations were a mix of the available languages in ED, it would, IMO< add a lot to the feeling of the galaxy being a huge, diverse place!

As it is, I'm very depressed to think the galaxy will only be populated by British people, nothing against Brits but, I'd like some variety :D

good point.
still i prefer to stay unheard ;)

but there has to be some answering machine i can switch on...telling people i don't voicechat (or even better there is no way to VC me if i opt out).
would save some time and frustration on the callers side...

Don't see it working on a "global" (galactic? :D ) scale, it would just be like in other games where the chat moves so fast with offers and spam that you'd never get anything out of it anyway, like others already said... But I too would enjoy some sort of a system wide chat, or at least station-wide.

Anything...if i can opt out, no problem.
And i mean a real opt out, not just filtering what i see.
No spamtraffic for me please ;)

Oh definitely, I agree. No matter what if they added something like that (even small scale like station or system) there should be a way to completely turn it off :)

Does anyone know why we don't get local chat?

Pure speculation, but maybe they want to wait for the walking-around stuff first? Chatting with others in a Station cantina would be more interesting than through a text box. I still think there's a place for local chat though, even with something like that in the game.

Surely FD must have made a statement at some point

Those posts are quite a bit down the rabbithole of the forum by now and I can't be bothered chasing after them right now. ;)

Basically, the reasoning from Sandro (and other devs) was/is that this easily can create a lot of "spam" which they don't want. People sitting outside a popular station and filling up the channel with crap. Things that easily brings you out of the moment.

They seem to have warmed somewhat to the idea lately. Previously it was a clear no from their side, but as I quoted above Sandro has shifted his opinion somewhat recently. I suspect that we will get a version of it eventually at some point. I do understand why they are taking it slowly in this regard though. If it gets implemented they can't take it away later if they change their minds about it so they need to feel really sure about the decision before they pull the trigger. "Nerfing" a weapon/ship is one thing...giving the players chat channels and later removing them again something quite different. ;)
