Glorious PC Master Race, or is it?

We all know it, PC are the Master of gaming or is it? In ED we did notice, when ED was released in 2014, it could run on a potato or a Abacus. Today with Horizons that is not the case anymore.

Running ED on Ultra / high and getting 60 FPS at all times are sometimes a struggle even for some of the mid range PC GPU's.

I did some tests and I have no view limit all set on ultra / high on all settings. I locked my FPS to 60 FPS.

The FPS do not drop, however the heat generated are one of the signs of GPU load.

Around station and outposts its around 58 C, on planets close to large settlements I'm at 70 C.
Asteroid fields same as Stations 58 - 60 C

I was then wondering if my GPU release this kind of heat running ED, what would XB do in the same situation? This also tells me that we still need to see the new graphics fixes for the asteroid fields and lightning in the game.

So to my fellow PC / XB owners, what are your heat levels and do you see any changes on the heat curves from patch to patch?

Do you see any heat change on the XB (can you actually check it?)

Is it fair to attempt any comparison between the Xbone and the PC versions? You'll never get as pretty a game on the Xbone, and isn't it locked to 30fps? (I know we all love to think the game was dumbed down for Xbox, but I have enough conspiracies to track, thank you) It can never be an 'xFPS on Xbone' vs 'xFPS on PC' argument when the picture displayed each frame isn't the same quality.

Not getting involved in the arguement but some data here:
My rig barely heats apart from when I'm doing heavy stuff like route plotting in the core or around when a station goes into combat.

FPS during normal operation ranges between 50 and 70. Run on full graphics with minor modding to put 8k textures in and enhance the background galaxy with more nebula/stars visible etc

Would love more graphics intensive stuff, lets make it like the original crysis was back in the day. On the other hand I can see why that would perhaps be lower on the to-do list than a lot of other things.

and here I am, running the game at 3620x1527, with maxed details, and getting 60 fps constant. I desire harsher graphics settings.

There's no 'master race' thing, at best it is the same with people accusing someone playing a game they don't like of being casual while they themselves are 'hardcore'

Consoles are not as powerful as pc's, no, fact.
can gaming on a console be enjoyable anyway? most definitely.
As enjoyable as a pc? most definitely since it all depends on who's playing what.

So yeah...

Maybe you're making a bit of a mountain out of a mole hill? From Nvidia's own website:
"NVIDIA GPUs are designed to operate reliably up to their maximum specified operating temperature. This maximum temperature varies by GPU, but is generally in the 105C range (refer to the nvidia.com product page for individual GPU specifications)."

Let me put it this way, Mr. Chaos. The Nvidia series is the most reliable GPU ever made. No Nvidia GPU has ever made a mistake or distorted information. We are all, by any practical definition of the words, foolproof and incapable of error.

Hi Guys, great reply's I was not going to make a console vs PC thread, as you could read I was trying to make a bit of fun. (hint the picture)

However I do wonder where the heat goes on the XB compared to a PC? there are clearly room for more intensive graphics, but as we can see with horizons its coming.
So when horizons hit the XB they will need to A. optimise the graphics or B. lower the graphic level or C. wait to release it until the next gen XB are released?

I've got Elite and Horizons on my PC, I bought an XBOne for my grandson and Elite on it for Christmas. The games LOOK close to the same at first glance, but I quickly realized there's a lot of things missing on the XBOne version that I see on my PC, model/graphics based things. For instance, inside the hanger, when you look forward, you see stairs and a doorway on the PC, on the XBOne, just a blank wall, every station and outpost, no stairs on that wall across the pit in front of you. Other little things here and there pop out to me, which shows me that the XBOne version is definitely not as demanding as the PC version.

Can't see the heat of the XBOne so no way to compare that. I don't pay attention to how hot my gpu runs, as long as it stays in the safe zone, I don't care :) I'm pushing it hard right now, out in the Black with SS set to 2x and everything cranked to the highest possible via manual editing of my config file, so my fps are barely in the 60s while in space and drop to the 20s on planets, but my gods it looks SO damn good! Makes for amazing high res screenshots, which I use for my desktop at home and work.

Well, here we go. I own the game on both Xbox and I have to say there isn't a great deal of difference at all in space. The system I run is (roughly) equivalent to the Xbox with an AMD athlon 860k a GTX 750 and 16gb of RAM. It falls close to the minimum specs for ED Horizons but still plays it relatively well.

I have no doubt that the Xbox will be able to do the same, but it needs a lot of optimisation to do so. Just as the game would need if it were to run at full speed on a low end PC. There will be compromises for the system but it will run fine in the end.

E:D still uses only a fraction of available resources. Still, it's stutters and has threading issues due to bad software design.
Just compare to SC, which uses four times (!) the CPU power and double the GPU power on my rig compared to the maximum E:D can achieve in Horizons.

Still, X-Box can't render at 4k, it's probably too slow for OR, and it doesn't handle all the other software that is running in parallel on my rig, from videos to the forums on other screens.

So in essence, I don't feel any heat (literally) from E:D, while SC rapidly heats up my room as CPU and GPU power draw increases by a few hundred watts.

SC has literally no optimization. Extensive resource usage is just a sign of bad hardware resources management, or total lack of. What exactly you are trying to say?

My GPUs don't heat up at all running ED: H, but then they're dynamically clocked to stay at the same max temp and loaded much more than what ED: H can provide on ultra anyway, at least frame rate limited using VSync.

If you want to know GPU load percentages and change in load by running ED: H more specifically on my setup instead of going on heat, feel free to ask.

IIRC 70C is good for a GPU. They can run that hot as opposed to a CPU where 70C is panick range.

I never thought of locking my framerate at 60. Hmmm....
