There is an interesting graphical "glitch" that happens occasionally in Elite where the graphics turn into what looks like an old 16-color VGA monitor. Usually when this happens I just open the system map and the graphics reset to their normal colors. This happened to me today when I was in my Asp, and I opened the system map to "reset" the graphics. Everything looked normal again, but then I noticed the following planet which was actually glowing:
The planet was literally glowing blue. I flew in for a closer look and it was clear that the planet's rings were glowing:
You can clearly see the shadow along the rings where the system's main star is illuminating the planet with "normal" light so the glowing blue effect was a separate light source entirely:
The glow was coming from the rings and not the planet itself as it disappears when the rings are viewed edge-on:
The glow was quite intense and bathed the ship in blue light as I got closer:
When I quit to the main menu and re-entered the game, the graphics reset to their proper colors and the glow was gone:
So it just turned out to be a graphics "glitch" but the effect was really striking seeing "glowing" planetary rings.
