God damn pirates

hurr durr pirates are griefers. Lol no joke :D

Up until now, my trade route (around 2500Cr/ton profit, depending on prices) has been completely safe from CMDR pirates. Even though it's a very safe route, I always scan Commanders in multipurpose ships, Vultures and Fer-De-Lances, since these are potential pirate ships. It has become a habit to do so as soon as other CMDRs appear on my radar and god damn, this habit has saved my unarmed T7 full of superconductors twice!

During my first ever player pirate encounter, I saw a Commander in a Clipper. I scan him and see that he has a cargo scanner, FSD interdictor and hatch breaker, so it's a pirate. I throttle down and drop from supercruise and fly in normal space for a couple of seconds, hoping that he hasn't noticed my T7. I engage the FSD again and the Clipper is still there but it's in the process of interdicting a T6. Phew, I'm safe, so I carry on with delivering the superconductors to the station. Poor T6 got robbed and/or destroyed. #neverforget #ript6 #justice4traders

Second encounter however was amazing. One of the systems I have to jump through on my trade route is Mopanyane. When I drop out at the main star in Mopanyane, I see a Commander in a Vulture near the star. I scan and see that he/she has typical piracy equipment such as a hatch breaker and FSD interdictor. While looking at the sub-systems list, I notice that the Vulture is turning around and moving in to interdict me. Oh crap, oh crap, I can't escape from a Vulture in a T7. I hit the FSD emergency stop button because I didn't have time to slow down for a safe drop from supercruise. In pure panic, I pointed my ship towards the next jump and destroy the boost button to get as far away from the dropout point as possible. The FSD finally cools down and I engage it. Then I noticed a hollow square on my radar BUT... my FSD was almots done charging so I'm pretty much safe. Before jumping out, I write "oh balls" in the local chat.

To the pirate in a Vulture in Mopanyane: you owe me 300 credits in repair costs from the emergency FSD stop lol. And thanks for making my trade route a bit more exciting.

This game needs more criminal scumbag pirates because they make trading a lot more fun.

And yes, positive rant about pirates, which is a profession that should be encouraged more, even though pirates are criminal scum. :)

Yeah, pirates are great fun. I've been known to go looking for them, baiting them, just so I can have the thrill of trying to escape.

I fear pirates are going to become increasingly frustrated as the methods for eluding them become more widely known.
Respect to the OP for having a bit of fun and completely agree that the robbing swines bring a great deal to the ED party :)

nice one.

you see thats the difference from you to other people here whining about pvp in Elite and hiding in offline or pve groups. You are AWARE of your surroundings and react accordingly and thus HAVE FUN!

Oh please come on, a trader admitting that pirates are actually making this game fun? What's next, telling us you prefer to stick to Open? ;)
+ rep

I play in open all the time with one (and the only) exception. I farmed RES in Solo and Group play for a lil' while to get the T7. I did it to avoid kill stealers and those who open fire if someone gets a 200Cr bounty on their head for touching a clean pilot with lasers or if a cannon projectile hits a clean pilot behind the wanted one (I witnessed a CMDR in an Eagle get destroyed by other CMDRs for a 200Cr bounty - RIP).

my method foe getting away from pirates is simple: I shoot them. repeatedly. Unless they come at me in larger groups of large ships. But so far I've managed to cash in the bounty on almost every pirate that tried to get a piece of me... but then, only NPC pirates so far.

Don't worry dude I was just kidding. It's just so surprising to say a trader posting on the forum to say something nice about piracy :)

Good read. I would love pirates for the excitement they provide if not for one single thing: losing all exploration data upon destruction can be devastating! As mainly an explorer, after a very deep space trip with hundreds of system data, one pirate can wreck the entire thing. When I do trading runs I really don't mind the danger, losing a cargo load once in awhile is tolerable. Losing several weeks worth of exploration data is just too much. I stay in open play, but on my return trip when I see another commander, any at all, I run and hide and go the other way until I get my payday.

Same here, I never back away from an interdiction. I upgraded the power plant on my Cobra and the power distributor, plus 2 medium gimbaled beam lasers and 2 small gimbaled beam lasers, I had to escape only twice so far. I've never been interdicted by a real players, only NPCs. With the 1.3 update that promises smarter NPCs, I guess I'll have to be more careful.

Speaking of which, on my first try to the beta, I got interdicted by a large ship. I thought it could have been an Anaconda but I'm not sure. Anyway, I drop from super cruise and engage him. On a first close encounter, he takes out my shields while I barely dented his. Checking what's going on I realize in horror that my load out is not what I was expecting to be. It was an older configuration and I have none of my upgrades. I start to try running but then, my canopy is breached. 5 minutes to get to safety. There are no stations in the system where we are so I pick the one where I'm coming from and jump. 3 minutes. The nearest station is over 1000 Ls. I engage full throttle. 2 minutes. I drop out of hyper jump. The station is an outpost and the landing pad is on the other side from where I'm coming. 1 minute. I'm approaching as fast as my piloting skills allow me. 30 seconds. The pad is in sight, right ahead. I push the throttle a bit. 20 seconds. Landing gear down. Final approach. 10 seconds. I think I'm going to make it. At the very last moment, when setting my Cobra down, I run out of time. I die there. If I had like 10 seconds more, I would have made it. Bummer! Cost me about 50K credits to learn that when you play the beta, you don't get the ship that you have in the regular game. You get an older copy. I shall remember it...

Nice story. +1!

i wish piracy was viable. I'd play alestorm - drink and it would be a blast.

Unfortunately, piracy is a crime and crime doesn't pay in elite. Not yet anyway. And there aren't any pirates in my area to spice anything up.

Piracy needs a non-destructive way to steal goods and it has to be relatively fast and yet still allow the trader to avoid it. Meaning, piracy needs a way to quickly interrupt a hatch without taking down shields or damaging the system allowing an item to be taken. This should occur one at a time with this method, each time requiring direct line of site for the limpet to momentarily disrupt the hatch and retrieve 1 item. All the while the trader is maneuvering to keep the pirate out of line of site and escape or fight. Obviously this would be a crime.

This way pirates have potential to make credits every encounter regardless if they do damage or the trader jumps out asap. The trader might lose a ton of two during a quick get-away but hardly enough to destroy their gameplay. The pirate racks up bounties during each heist. Here the pirate goes for quantity to fill their hold, possibly getting a couple ton per ship they interdict assuming they're good and the trader is just boosting away asap.

This would make piracy much more an act of pure theft. You could still go the route of full on demanding all the cargo or blowing out their hatch but most piracy i believe would follow the "sip from many" method as it would be easier on the pirate and drive less of their victims away to other systems / modes.

I think with the above in place, you'll see piracy become somewhat viable rather than people just doing it when they're bored to pvp and it would actually start fitting the role as intended. And it would be self regulating since the new bounty changes going into affect would quickly become an issue for all but the actual dedicated pirates.
