Gog.com has a sale. What space games would you recommend?

I know this belongs in the Space/Sci-Fi Gaming forum but I can't post there....I won't be offended if this post gets moved. Gog.com has a sale and I'm looking at getting a space game or 2. The only exposure to space games I've had were Star Raiders and the Last Starfighter on an Atari. I don't want another spaceship-cockpit shoot 'em up, but something different from Elite Dangerous. Any suggestions?

Starflight might be a bit too old skool...

And no use using GOG sale for Star Control II, because you can experience with less hassle by downloading the freeware port of it, Ur-Quan Masters. [up]

X3 (get the Terran War pack rather than Reunion, mainly for some great mods which are available) is an amazing game if you like the idea of building up from your lone ship to running an empire. It has a steep learning curve and a powerful but opaque UI that takes some getting used to. But I can't recommend it enough when it comes to space games that offer a different experience to Elite.

You may want to have a look at "Homeworld remastered Collection", Real Time Strategy.
Knight of the old Republic I+II perhaps, timeless classics really, single player RPGs.
From a quick glance at the GOG sale, those are the ones i can recommend from personal experience.

I didn't even know they were on GOG, just looked and they have Privateer 2 for £1.99. I loved the ships in that game so much I modeled them all for a Starlancer mod :D

Privateer 2 is what got me into space sim games. So get that.

X big box is worth getting as well (I assume they have it).

Any if the star wars ones as well, TIE Fighter,

Freespace

I have to agree with this. For a long time, the X series by Egosoft was a great filler while we waited for Elite IV.

Even if you don't want "another spaceship-cockpit shoot 'em up" at the moment, get i-War 2. It's way more accessible than the first part, and IMO one of the greatest games of the genre. The last few missions are utter butt, but up to then it's a great example on doing space "right".

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
For non-cockpit shoot-em-ups:

Star Control II (but just get the Ur-Quan Masters re-release elsewhere for free
Master of Orion II
Nexus: The Jupiter Incident
Space Quest 1-6
Star Wars Rebellion

Oooh...also Star Wars Republic Commando. That game is quite satisfying to play and I don't have to play as a stanky Rebel.

As already suggested, Nexus and Homeworld are two great RTS games for those who likes something different from "cockpit shooters", imho Homeworld is THE space real time strategy game. But you shouldn't miss on a cockpit shooter the likes of Freespace 2, that's an absolute masterpiece and I'll always be glad to Gog for managing to have it in their catalogue. Excellent gameplay, great and long campaign, and upgradable to "modern day" graphics thanks to FSOpen (the game code has been released years ago as opensource). Also, a motherload of free campaigns and total conversions available...they made a whole new unofficial Wing Commander game with it! (and don't get me started on BSG Diaspora...)

Also the X game series (*raises his flak shield* yes, even Rebirth), but won't comment on them for the risk of being too biased....let's say I'm still quite involved with them ...
