Going back home - terrified

I'm on my long way back home from Sag A*, in an Adder with no shields, no weapons, and lame but lighter 2D Thrusters (full spec here: http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=70f,mpV0Wg0Wg,2-3I3m4s2C3m5K5A,5DI4zW0J42jw2UI)

And the more I rush back home, the more I get terrified, fearing an interdiction that will blow my <Ahem> off.

Is this fear justified? What can I do to prevent annihilation before selling that beloved scan data at Rhea, my home system?

I have pledged to Felicia Winters, Rank 1 and 0 merits because of the period that I got exploring. Should I quit the faction now hoping to encounter less hostiles in the bubble?

Should I rush the first outfitting station to put some shields in my ship?

I'm getting crazy here... Oh, is it you, Lady Space Madness?? [wacky]

I've also been terrified. When You first see an NPC on your compass, your heart starts to beat up in your throat, and you start to chant "pls dont interdict me....pls dont".
And then...you jump. Phew... just a couple more of systems to go. And when you finally enter your home station "damn i'm home". Arranging an escort is a good idea btw.

Well for a start, don't go all the way back to your home system! Stop at Quince, it's the obvious system to stop at 500LY outside the bubble on the way back from Sag A. It's elite's last homely house and it has a station just 400ls out from the star..

You are worrying over nothing. The chances of being interdicted are minimal, just jump as normal and remember to ask for docking permission and lower your landing gear. You've much more chance of forgetting them.

The chances of being interdicted are minimal

That really depends actually, on two things:

1. How many systems you're planning to jump through.
2. Whether you've picked up any cargo while exploring (Increases interdiction probability considerably just like missions do)

That's why I suggest stopping at the first populated station rather than flying through to your home system, it's what I always do.

i never was pledged to any powers so i dont really know how much that increases interdictions - in enemy power space - otherwise its like Traveller said. You can fly hours without getting bothered by any npc if your cargo hold is empty and you didnt accept any missions.
BUT
nevertheless getting shields would be a wise decision ;)

I'm a bit nervous too. Been to the core and neutron fields - been out since September, delayed through real life commitments - only 5k l.y. to go and got distracted yesterday on a routine jump... got in a fight with a star and hull down from 95% to 50% and suddenly from feeling relaxed about getting back to thinking I can't afford another mistake..!

I got intedited within 2 seconds of arriving in a populated system on my way back from SagA. Got away with losing one ring of shields. I suggest plotting a route beyond your target system so that you can high wake out easily.

This will make me sound like a paid-up member of the Tin-Foil Hat Brigade but on trips back to the Bubble I don't reveal on the forum where I'm heading or the location of my Home Station. Threads have ears, you know? Wrong-uns might be reading. I fly in Open most of the time so clearly my paranoia won't apply to those who use Mobius, Kamzel or Solo...unless they have been infiltrated, of course.

Flying whilst turning around obsessively

Always worry. Keeps you alive.
My advice: pick a system as close to the periphery of the bubble (Quince) and sell data. Don't bother with specific systems in your case, and defo ditch any allegiance.

Allegiance doesn't work for explorers.

Definitely quit Winters and drop any cargo. Otherwise nothing to worry about. Fears of NPC interdictions for empty unpledged explorer ships are completely overblown.

Federation enablers should always worry. Reprisal will be sought.

Choose an edge system to sell your data at with a station close to the star. If you have to go through the bubble, dont do it. Go around and approach from another angle

Also choose a system that isnt important to the PP faction, and it is wise to approach in solo or in a private group

There doesn't seem to be any consistency to interdictions in the bubble. I used to think that the NPCs would pick on unarmed non-combat ships mostly, but now I just think it's random.
For example, got interdicted in Founders World today by a DBS while in my A-rated Python. I'm not wanted, wasn't carrying any cargo and am not pledged to a power - just pew-pew for no reason.

In any case there is some trickery that you can use to avoid interdictions when flying a weakly shielded or non-shielded ship:
1. Make sure you have a key or joystick binding for "target next". When you arrive in a system and there are NPCs about, cycle through the targets and check the ship type. You can safely ignore T6,7 and 9 ships, they won't bother you.
2. Watch for ships trying to get behind you. Target a suspicious ship and watch to see if it's trying to get right behind you. If you think you're about to be jumped, cut throttle and pull up or down on your controller to bring the target to your nose. As soon as your speed is low enough, drop out of supercruise and either prepare to jump to the next system or get ready to enter SC again if you're on your way to a station. This will buy you some time to get away. The interdictor may drop in on you, but you should already be on your way if he does.
3. Interdictions can be buggy. Instead of fighting it, throttle down immediately to submit and start running right away. Chances are that your interdictor is going to get some shots in, but rather take the hits then risk failing an interdiction and end up spinning out of control while giving the interdictor the opportunity to really pound you.
4. When you're near the bubble take the opportunity to fill you tank with fuel while there are no NPCs around. Don't waste time scooping - just head towards your station as fast as possible. NPCs will try and grab you will you are refuelling.

I'd also recommend going to Jaques station. (Type "Jaques" into the galaxy map search to get where it's currently at.) It's a good distance out from other inhabited systems, there is only one NPC faction in the system, and it's a unique station too. Too bad it appears to either have been forgotten or been stranded for a long while now. Oh, and the distance to the entry point is quite short - around 85 Ls, if memory serves.
