Going large, lacking direction

I recently got a Clipper after grinding Empire ranks for a few evenings. Love the looks of the ship, which I've minimally kitted out in a multi-function role. I have prioritised cargo, but kept an ADS/DSS + small fuel scoop, just in case. Can't afford to upgrade everything so I'm sure I've not seen its potential yet. Currently weaponless as I'm leaning slightly towards trade/exploration, and I think I can outrun things before they get too annoying. I've never had the attention span to do much trading due to having to work out profitable routes took more time than the actual trading.

The thing is... it is my first "large" ship. If I understand correctly I can't dock at outposts any more (haven't tried). I had wanted to do delivery missions on the side for more rank, and I believe they are coming up without warning the destination is at an outpost. I guess I could go back to my parked up Asp for rank grinding, but are there any more things I might have overlooked with running a large ship?

You can still do delivety missions. All it takes is a look at the galaxy/system map to confrim that the destination isn't an outpost.

If it were me, I'd turn to doing a bit of trading just to get the funds for future upgrades. I'd fit weapons just so you can have some fun at nav beacons if it started to feel a bit of a grind. Use a trading tool to identify a good route if you are in a hurry for quick profits. Once you have accrued sufficient funds, the opportunities will be wider. Clipper is not a great ship for exploration, but this should be fixed in 1.3 when fuel tank expansions arrive.

Have a look on here for CMDR'S Log.

You record your stations visited and commodities and prices.

Makes trading a pleasure. I have it running on a separate old monitor.

The Python is what, double the price of the clipper? That isn't happening any time soon.

I get what you're saying about the missions. As said, I can drop back into my Asp for that. Guess my surprise was the mission system doesn't warn you the destination doesn't have a large pad size. I know I can check, but that is extra time and effort... for now I'll keep trying trading in the Clipper and will simply pass on those missions.

Thanks all.

Why not, your earning potential increases with the clipper. You may be surprised how quickly you are knocking on the Python's cabin door. :)

Until then the Clipper is a versatile, fast craft, you just need to remember how big it is.

I'm back on the trade routes now, will see how that goes. Most of my cash from before has either been from combat based CGs, or exploring. At least exploring wouldn't scale much from ship size, and I had to sell my Vulture to fund the Clipper so wont be doing any mass combat in the near future.

Had a little detour already, as although I was tipped off about a CG discount for the clipper, I couldn't find it at the time so I bought it at founders world anyway. Now I found it by accident, and after doing the sums it was still worth swapping ships over, freeing up >2M credits. Faster than I can get it trading anyway.

I also just had my first letterbox scrape purely from pilot error... must have turned inside the station a fraction too early. Gotta watch out for that! Also I suspect the landing point isn't zero indicated altitude any more. Or is there something else going on? I'm sure the docking clamps are engaging earlier than I think they should be. The only possible contributing factor is I might not be exactly level which throws the indicator off?

I've been hearing occasional shield fizzy noises when docking the clipper on more than one occasion. Been struggling to look it up, but so far I've seen indication the Clipper is as wide as a T9, which is supposed to be pretty wide! Is that the case? I've been going to the side of other craft through the slot, so if it is that wide, that'll explain it!

You made the same jump in ships that I did, Vulture to Clipper. I too made 99% of my Cr's from fighting, but that is slowly changing. In my sweet Clipper, I've interdicted wanted pirates, smuggled a ton of cargo, helped newbies in RES, did a 1500LY exploration from SOL, and started trading.

What at I have found is that the lateral trusters are no where near the vultures, however, they are still useful. This ship can be thrown around, IF, you keep the sped in the blue zone. So boost forward to 400 m/s, then pull back to blue zone and do your maneuver. Then halfway through the maneuver boost again and watch it zoom.

As as for the letterbox, From 8-9 K out, I boost 4 times. I also get lined up with the letterbox 4K out. Then, hit the 4th boost at full throttle there. This gives 400 or more M/s, then pull back throttle to blue area. I go through the box at around 150-250 m/s. While in letter box, I drop throttle and lower gear. I can make any pad I'm assigned this way. This is my non-trading way to enter, as I have a size 7 shield. When trading, I go super slow, because I only have a 4A shield and usually 2M worth of cargo. To much to risk.

The site picture while landing is significantly different from the vulture! You are looking over the control tower in front of you. But, the grid coordinates will still say zero. You are in a much larger ship. So you just have to get that down.

Myfighting set up: it's what I can afford at the moment!

they are not perfect set ups, but they work for me :)

right now I'm in Fed space gaining ranks and loving the game!

Actually I moved from Asp to Clipper. The Asp was my day to day ship, with the Vulture as something fun for the weekends :)

The Powerplay announcement is now something to consider into my plans also. Longer term I think I'll stick it out with the Empire, but now debating if I should get more ranks with the Feds in case it becomes more difficult after Powerplay...
