How much fuel did the Apex get through in the supercruise stage?
I'm wondering if you can get it to run out of fuel if you started from a system ~100 LY away from Alpha Centauri first...

Nah, taxi pilot gets them for being the one that actually flew the trip.

OP got scammed by an npc
Npcs fly blue the whole way. So it's roughly 1/3 longer.
yeah, and if i remember phase 1 correctly, they dont exactly optimize their course
