Goldilocks zone on System map

I think it would be useful to explorers if we could get a goldilocks zone on the System map. It would make it easier for explorers to decide which bodies are more likely to be terraformable and decide if they should fly out to High Metal Content worlds and do a Detailed Surface Scan on them.

I'd have thought that it would be possible in 3303 for a computer to be able to work out the goldilocks zone from the details it gets from a surface scan of the star, so my suggestion would be that after a star is scanned with a DSS, the goldilocks zone shows up for that star on the map.

So just as an indication as to what I mean.

Player drops in and has a Discovery Scanner onboard. (Same as now)

Player honks with ADS. (same as now)

Player scans star without a DSS (same as now with or without a DSS)

Player scans star with DSS (suggestion - apologies in advance for general rubbishness of picture)

I'm all for things that make it better for other players without massively changing the way the game plays, this would be a minor QOL improvement, but not something I would use a lot, I base my decisions on what planets to visit on different criteria, this is mainly to decide which planets return more creds when scanned and that's not a priority for me. Other things that would come to mind if this was implemented is a selection of ranges, for instance we know that Brain Trees and Bark Cones appear on planets with a specific temperature range, I would personally find it more useful if we could map that temperature range.

Be interesting to see how this would be affected by a system like HIP 63835, which was an O-class giant, an A-class star, 3 K-class stars, a G-class star, 3 L-class dwarves, 5 brown dwarves, and 3 black holes.

I actually think the computer could fairly easily calculate heat values from different sources. Once. It just had to figure one zone for each star, run distances from each star to probably <100 targets, and add heat from each, right? The planets have temperature values already, that must be mostly from the stars, plus planet maths? However it works, computers are pretty good at math in 3d-space.

Too expensive to do it once per frame, probably, but you only need to do it on scan, when you jump into a system.

Hello, Trent. :)

Sounds like a good idea to me. No idea if it would be tricky to develop for the more chaotic systems. If and when we get the ability to explore life-bearing worlds, then I think it would be a more useful thing.

all you really need to know is the Stellar mass and heat - you can work out the rest from there

That link has an excellent graphic that shows the goldilocks zone once you enter the values. then you can see by changing the years into the future how the goldilocks zone will change

the default is setup when you go the page is Sol and Earth

Actually I think ED Discovery already does that for you, or is it another one I am thinking of. I distinctly remember a listing for whether or not a particular body was in the goldilocks zone in one program, I will check next time I am in game.
