I keep thinking about buying this as I used to really enjoy golf games on the PC. However it only garners very mixed reviews on Steam and the lack of the traditional 3-click system is also a bit of a shortcoming. Has anyone played it and if so, recommended purchase or not. (I know I could buy and try for 1.99 hours but prefer not to go through the refund hassle if possible).

Yeah I own it, it's a good golf game - plenty of customisation options, downloadable fan-made courses etc., and I do actually like the swing mechanism, feels somehow more "natural" and less artificial than the 3-click system. Good tutorial as well to get you into it.
VR golf is what's needed along with a club with trackmaster measuring distance/accuracy. I'd play the hell out of that. Might be the only chance to play Augusta.
Not VR but golf on the Nintendo WiiU is a laugh.
I think its a fun golf game, also with current steam sale price you cant go wrong
