good and bad parts of progression

ok, i'l start with what i have been getting up to for game progression since release and some observations:

initially, i was sick of grinding from beta and gamma so decided to try to make money from mainly bounty hunting NPCs after release. other than NPC opponents jumping away with 1-5% hull (why does none of their systems stop working with that much damage like player ships do?), it is actually a reasonable earner now. it is not that uncommon to find targets with sizable bounties at nav points so i can make a living from that activity. having a kitted out cobra for this task helps and is useful in conflict zones as well.

but, as i started needing more expensive upgrades for the cobra (to make it perfect for fighting and exploration), combat income became insufficient and trading became a necessity to raise funds quickly. so, i bought a type 6, upgraded it into a dedicated space truck (it is pretty much cargo space with big engines now lol). trading was unbalanced (exporters not having an export item even listed in their market and importers having lower prices on items than exporters?!) and i was making very little from it until i ran into Thrudd's site (http://www.elitetradingtool.co.uk/). Using that tool, money started rolling in properly and trading became profitable again (can make over 100Kcr per run now). trading does need fixing but the third party tool will do for now.

after making enough to install advanced and surface scanners on the cobra, i decided to try my hand on exploration and that is completely broken (similar to mining) and a complete waste of time at the moment. i did as highly detailed scans as possible on a few large and distant systems (took a fair amount of time) but made less money than i would have from bounty hunting on a single navpoint till security turns hostile.

as a summary, bounty hunting works, trading is broken but can be managed using Thrudd's trading tool but exploration and mining are minimal earnings for maximum time spent so are in effect useless unless you are doing them just for fun. i have no idea how profitable piracy is as it is against my commander's in game character (maybe someone else can inform us on this).

getting to the biggest problem; rating progress is too easy whereas faction progress seems impossible. i have done missions and taken part in many conflict zones and everyone is still neutral and i only have the lowest rank with the empire and none at all with federation and alliance. at the same time, all the effort made towards faction progress has resulted in me earning expert rank for combat, merchant rank for trading and scout for exploration. that seems completely backwards to me and is also the opposite of original Elite:

I know that there is that silly competition for rank and FD might have made ranks easier just for that (bad move if that is the reason) but i am finding it very annoying; basically, considering how many systems need permits, faction reputation building should be easier and quicker. On the other hand, i should not have the ratings i do considering how little time i spend in the game (busy life). i remember that with the original elite, it took me forever to get an expert rating and the ranks are supposed to be the main aim of the game. i can see the universe filled with Elite pilots in no time and that sort of takes away from its status. The faction problem simply means it would take me forever to earn permits and with most of the smaller ones, it doesn't even make sense to try.

Please feel free to correct me if i am incorrect with any of my observations or seem to be missing useful information on how i can approach them differently (as in the case of trading with the right third party tool). btw, fanbot trolling will be ignored.

Cheers

Sorry, I disagree with you. If you rely on the logic in game, yes it may be broken. Perhaps you are using the 'trade mechanic in the map' - agree, it's borked.
But using your own observations of export / import proces can easilly net you round trips worth 2000-2700 credits profit per ton.
But it takes a bit of work - it's your own accomplishment if you take your time to visit 8-9 systems, 12-15 stations.

Don't know whether you experience some bugs, but this is how we do it,
- decide on a faction.
- check a station, supporting the faction you want to support.
- find mission in that station, but only for the company supporting your faction (check the right screen in your cockpit to see reputation / system status). Easy to identify said faction supporters.
Make sure you do mission for these, within 3-10 mission you should get a friendly status or even allied depending on your mission.
- Ranking then can be done thereafter, Getting a naval mission every "5-10 normal missions"

Works quite nicely for all of us in our ED team.
Both standing, allied with many corps, and Faction rank knight / lord / baron etc - increase as expected.
PS: Don't confuse the 'right panel, Status, System Status INFLUENCE' with your own. It's system ownership Influence - some of our guys have inadvertently though it was their own Influence.

My experience has been the opposite; took me all of two nights to go from recruit to Lt. Commander in the Federation Navy.

interesting with the reputation comments. about to sit down for a gaming session, will give it another try.

Panzertard, i'll take that as a small disagreement as i was mainly referring to using in game tools for trading. your suggestion would work if you are into that side of the game and spending all that time finding the right systems to trade between would be rewarding instead of annoying. i am making similar return trip profits using the tool mentioned, it basically does what you do to find the systems which is great for me as i see trading as a way to make money so i can do other stuff.

Hominin, yes, I think the disagreement is just my poor English skills if so.
As you say, it depends on what your cup of tea is ...
But as you mentioned, the ingame tools are horrible at the moment. But again I'm pretty confident that we'll see better mechanics in game in a little while as they expand the game.

ok, tried a few different things last sitting. it seems that faction rank is mainly based on completing progress missions. Previously, I used to take any warzone missions when they existed and focused on the conflict zones whether i have a mission to do so or not (it is brilliant watching a capital ship jump in).

This time i just focused on missions and that resulted in going up a few ranks (serf to squire). Strangely enough, the missions that increase your rank are usually very trivial (why i was ignoring them before). You don't even need to get involved in the fighting to rank up (lame). I even got a permit for Achenar (was sad to see my old homeworld desecrated as expected) but they are still neutral?! it is very weird being trusted to visit a faction's homeworld when they are not even friendly, all factions are still stuck at neutral?! so now, it is easy to increase pilot and faction rating but still no luck with getting them to like me lol. also ended up ranking up to merchant after a handful of type6 runs too, ranking is far too easy and i expect the universe to be full of triple elite players in no time :/

so, i have tried missions, trade, warzone engagements, mercenary work and progress missions and still stuck at neutral. anyone know the trick to making factions like my commander? since i got my permit via faction rank, i am not sure if that is even important but it would be good to get an understanding of it and if it is a problem others are also experiencing, report it as a bug.

thanks
