Good grief...

Last week I was playing some Elite: Dangerous and felt the need to increase my credit balance a bit so I could afford a new power coupler on my Viper. So I hop into my Type 6 and head for the Old Worlds to pick up some rares. One of my stops was in Uszaa to pick up Uszaian Tree Grubs at guest installation.
I'm moving in slow on my approach siping on a Coca Cola when suddenly I find myself being interdicted. No problem. I throw off the threat and start moving toward Guest Installation (a little faster now).
Moments later I'm being interdicted again. This time the perpetrator pulls me in. I have no idea who or what I am up against so I start to turn my slow little Type 6 around to see what got me. Too late. Immediately I'm being pelted by multiple laser blasts and cannon fire. My shields drained before I can even blink. Full power to engines... boosting... I think I might have lasted 40 seconds from the moment I was pulled out of supercruise until my ship imploded in a ball of fire.
Then I see who got me. A fellow Commander. No comms, no warning, no provocation.
What's worse is the Commander's name. This same guy killed me TWICE in beta. I let myself be angry for about five minutes. Then I buy my ship back with the insurance thankful that most of my assets (in the form of two other well-kitted ships) are safely back at Mars High in Sol. I make up my losses in about 30 minutes of gameplay.
I play in Open because I invite interaction with other players. If I see this player again... I'll salute him. If I'm flying in my Viper when I see him It'll be a beam laser salute.

First mistake: Not submitting. Submitting cuts FSD charge time to a handful of seconds and is a much safer route than risking being pulled out with damage and in an uncontrolled spin, on top of having to wait forever for an FSD cooldown.
Second mistake: Checking to see who or what interdicted you after being pulled into the interdiction instance. As a wise woman once said, "ain't nobody got time for that". If you aren't boosting away and maneuvering so whatever contact on your screen is directly behind you the instant you enter that instance, you are doing it wrong.

People that interdict you will generally be hostile, and it's best to treat them as such. Unless you are confident that you are ready to win a fight, you want to be moving away as fast as possible and charging the FSD as soon as possible.

Also, if you do escape an interdictor, and that individual looks to be turning toward you again, drop out of SC and then make a jump to a different system.

I've adopted the practice of checking my contacts list before I turn. I can take on anything short of an Anaconda, so if I see one of those come up in the scan, I run like a little girl.

I just hit the, "Select Next Target" button when interdicted - You shouldn't need to turn around to see them. My T6 has better thrusters, upgraded power plant and distributor. I can boost twice in quick succession and it only takes seconds for it to charge up enough after the first boost. I remember an NPC Sidey managed to pull me out of Supercruise (doh :D) and he couldn't catch me! In a T6!

It's easy to tell who's wanting to Interdict you - They slowly come around to your stern. You can simply just drop out of SC and then jump back in again, then carry on. The best form of defense is prevention.

I always make a point of checking all player ships in the system, don't like nasty surprises. You have to assume that all player ships are pirates until proven otherwise.

Not in very high traffic systems. I was interdicted in Lave the other night because my interdictor was obscured by a mass of contacts and he didn't deploy hardpoints until the second he used the interdictor. I submitted and escaped, was never really at any risk, but there are definitely situations where it can be hard to tell if someone is about to try to interdict you.

It also saves the little bit of damage you take for an emergency drop out of supercruise.

Especially those of whom are in Vipers/Cobras! ;)

I'd taken to pirating, plus bounty hunting, as opposed to just the latter, in Duwaredari. Just SC'd around until I'd see a T6/7/9, Orca, etc. And head after them. I wouldn't pirate any other CMDRs though - There is a T6 CMDR who flies through there every now and again and I can't lie, I've been tempted, almost compelled, to pull him over! :) Pirating is bloody good fun... Although, murdering people - For no financial gain - just for the fun of it is utterly pointless. The overall punishment outweighs the risk, majorly. If your bounty is collected, then you stand to lose a lot of your own money - Since you have to pay the bounty!

Alas, I just sold up my Cobra for a T6 now and have been trading rares to rake in cash. Got almost 3 million in about 6-8 hours [was AFK for some of it]. Crazy money! :)

I have enough cash to buy a Cobra + all of the previous upgrades and still have about 2 million in the bank. My T6 is now worth 2,000,000. My Cobra was only ever worth 1,400,000  I wonder how much ass I could kick in a fully kitted out Cobra. Two more trading runs and I should be able to buy a Cobra and/or a Viper and stash them everywhere for rainy days.

I think it's great that the pirates / gankers are camping the rare systems. I got jumped by a viper in Lave last night, stupidly lost time running KWS on him (usual tactic against NPCs) instead of just switching firegroup to get all lasers and multicannons on him, and the shields in my Asp aren't fully upgraded yet, so he chewed through them quite quickly. At that point I decide to leave, so SC'd away, dropped back into normal space, selected a system further away than any viper can jump, and headed there.

It was great fun. This is what the game is about. Cost me 100kcr to repair, but that's a fraction of a single rares run. Hopefully next time I'll have upgraded shields and be better prepared. Then it is ON.

You can go from beginning of interdiction to back in SC after being interdicted in about 20-25 seconds.

This is my standard procedure when interdicted:

Yeah... I learned a lot from this incident.
1. Be aware of your surroundings. I never paid any attention to the difference between "solid" and "hollow" squares in the scanner. Now I know when another CMDR is around.
2. If I see this CMDR again (and I have) while in my Type 6... RUN!

Agreed. This was pure stupidity on my part. I hadn't been paying attention and didn't realize that it wasn't an NPC who got me. I figured if it was an Eagle or a Sidewinder I'd have no problem taking down an NPC even with just the loaner lasers. I've taken down a Viper in my Type 6. I've learned to be a lot more cautious.
