Good Guys in Green...?

Something odd was happening for a while, and I kind of liked it, but I don't know what was causing it.

For a while, ships would show up on the radar--and their bounding box on the main HUD--in green; I didn't have to do anything, it just happened. They almost always seemed to be some sort of system security ship, so I figured it was showing me the good guys.
Now, I thought it was the Kill Warrant Scanner I'd installed, but then I discovered I'd been using it wrong this whole time. Oops.
And then sometimes it would just stop happening altogether...and I have no idea whycome. Anyone know what the deal is? Cuz I'm stumped.

As you trade with a station you become 'known' to the faction controlling it. After a while they trust you, and will show up green.

You'll notice the station docking hail change as well, eventually it will be 'welcome trusted ally'. In the right hand panel under 'system' you can see your status with the local factions.
