Before I bought my DK2 I had a low-end gaming system with the following basic specs:
FX-8350 8-core OC'd to 4.3ghz
8gb 2133mhz OC Ram
1TB 7200 RPM HDD
AMD R9 270 2gb GDDR5 OC'd to 1050mhz
With my DK2 I would get noticeable stutter everywhere except an empty system in supercruise and witchspace. With all low settings, I would get ~45fps around stations or at nav beacons for dogfights, ~20-25fps at RES inside stations and docked and as low as 6-7fps in crowded supercruise. I decided to upgrade and thought I'd try the new GTX 960 and could not be happier.
I bought the Gigabyte GTX 960 Windforce OC for $199 on Amazon and OC'd the core clock to +150mhz and the memory clock to +450mhz which gives me 1540mhz core clock in boost mode. In game I have smooth framerates now in any supercruise situation, in massive dogfights at conflict zones and around stations. In stations I have little to no stutter and mild stutter once docked and I was able to bump up some of the quality settings as well. I have not been to an RES since the upgrade but expect there to still be mild stutter in that situation. I will update the next time I am at an RES.
After I sold my R9 to a friend for $100, this upgrade cost me a net $100 and I am blown away by the improvement as a DK2 user and thought I'd share my experience with this relatively low cost upgrade.
