Also try http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/

They do custom PC's and laptops. I bought my last desktop from them and the service was great.

I am also going to purchase a gaming laptop from them for ED as they have a good selection of chassis' to choose from.
Well this is not a store but it a great place to locate what your looking for. Notebookreview.com. Please note I took a Upper Mid range laptop. I had a Alienware M17x r2 with dual ati 4870. Because the graphics card where defective Dell upgraded them to dual ati 5870 . Well I have the option to upgrade the graphics to Dual 6970 or single 7970. Due to power limitations I can not go beyond one ati 7970 graphics card.

Note there could be issue upgrading a graphics card in a laptop.

1 You might have to manually control the Fan on the gpu. Using HWinfo for fan control

2 Stuff like HDMI might not work but your fans do work.

Do this at your own risk. research, research and do more research before doing something like this.

The only thing I been upgrading is the Ram to 16gb and SSD drive and then Overclock a unclockable cpu

Price-creep is a major problem when building a PC - there's always one more little tweak to be added.

I've resolved the issue in my mind now.

By my reckoning had I continued from the 80's buying fancy PCs and games I would have spent much more than I will now.

So after buying a new machine I am simply spending some of the money I would have spent but will have in effect saved money in the long run - which I think I deserve a pat on the back for!

Dabs or ccl for me (UK) and go through top cashback for the extra 2-3%

Dabs? wouldn't touch them with a barge pole after the last motherboard i bought from them, it was supposed to be a retail box - turned up in a brown cardboard box without any accessories at all

Not sure without trawling through the thread whether it has been recommended but pcpartpicker (uk) lets you trawl for the components you want then tells you the cheapest place to get them and iirc any incompatabilities:

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/

There is also US site for our septic cousins. In terms of what graphics card to get, this is the place to find out what's best value:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107.html

In short 3 choices for med/high end. Top 7950, next 7870 with Tahiti architecture then GFX 660. Hth

Dot Com Systems in Durham, Don't stock a lot but will order anything in you require. Will also build cheap gaming systems, Lower priced gear that still pack the punch, but don't use the main names with higher priced, unless you want that. Usual mobo's are Asus as they have fewer probelms with them.

Cracking customer service

Online from http://www.dotcomsystems.co.uk/

I would be biased though. My Mrs is joint owner of the pair of shops :p

Bought a top-range ATI gfx card from SCAN recently, they sent me an RMA second (card was clearly used, packaging was not prestine, RMA sticker still on the box). Was not impressed. SCAN weren't particularly helpful either, the card wasn't widely available at the time, and I didn't want to have to wait ages for the refund.

Needless to say, the card *was* returned and re-purchased at www.novatech.co.uk. But was less than impressed with Scan. Novatech also then, separately a week later, sent me two extra "free" games from the nvidia promotion that must've been expiring. Will check them out again.

Otherwise, I've used overclockers.co.uk and bought many things over the past ten years and had great service and prices throughout.

Another vote for Scan computers from me. I have used them for many years starting back in the 80's when they were situated in small premises. I seem to remember in Farnworth. I like the fast DPD delivery as well as an hour slot delivery time. Returns have never been a problem. Great prices and for me just over an hours drive away if I want stuff for a big project.
